What would you reccomend? My team is of avg athleticism...not great, not over matched. I think that applies to most every position. The weak point will be me being so new to coaching. I am adaptable and learn quickly and am a good teacher. I want something that will allow me to pass as consistantly as run and is equally good at both. Offset I? Bunch? Wild bunch? No one around here even tries to pass the ball. I want to. I watched last year as our flag team learned to do this....it was amazing. We lost our 1st game Horribly..HORRIBLY. We didn't loose again. No i will be moving up to the 9-10 year olds and want to do the same. Advice? Best place to by a DVD of said offense.
Passing with kids that age requires an emphasis on protection, IMO. I would protect with 8 and send 2 into the pattern for the most part. PA is terrific at that level. Vs. cover 1/3, freeze the LBs and Safties with the run fake and high-low a corner. This can be done a few different ways out of split backs. I doubt you will see two deep safties often.
I would recommend running out of double-tight because 1) your run game will be blocked identically on both side, 2) the 2nd TE can help in protection, 3) you can sneak a TE or RB out with less chance of being noticed.
If your QB is a threat to run, roll-outs (bootlegs) and sprint-outs can help you. This can put additional pressure on the CBs.
As far as materials on the Wild Bunch, Coach Ted Seay is the guy to learn from. He posts on this forum occasionally and you can find some of his stuff if you look around on the internet. I would be curious to know if he recommends the offense for younger youth teams.
Again, protection. Your opponents may not be able to put together a bunch of sophisticated coverages just for your team. They will however be able send 7 or 8 at you so being ready for it is paramount, IMO.
Thanks Coach. You think that PA will work? I wondered if the D would be coached well enough to respond correctly to the PA. I yeild to your expertise. Please offer more!!
