Flexbone, Double slot and Double wing..ok you smarter than I

Basic flexbone alignment (formation can also be a double slot). I ran the RUN AND SHOOT from a flexed end formation (both ends off the ball 14 yds.) with the wingbacks aligned most often at within 3 yds of the TACKLE on the front side and the TACKLE on the backside. There are similarities in alignment but a world of difference in concept of the different offenses. As Bill points out, Flexbone is about running while double wing is about passing mainly, although we ran the option out of it as well. If your a youth coach, I would suggest that you choose the easiest offense to teach your kids and forget about trying to be real sophisticated with an intricate offense at that level. Just a suggestion as always. KIDS ON THE YOUTH LEVEL NEED BASIC TRAINING, NOT ADVANCED INFANTRY TRAINING. For example, when teaching the kids to block on the line, teach them WHO to block before you teach them HOW to block. Reasoning is that it is much better to put a poor block on the RIGHT GUY, than it is to put a GOOD block on the wrong guy! Make it fun for them.

I appreciate all the feedback. I don't want to teach too much. I just want it to be an offense based on the ability to adjust. We are not the most gifted team. I want us to be able to run every chance we get. However there are a couple teams that we have no chance of being succesful just lining up and hittin the line. in this case I want our boys to be able to utilize misdirection and pass. Nothing fancy, some counters and i really like the sprint flood, especially with motion to trips. I want each play to be able to be run out of a couple different formations this way we learn a few plays and with the formation shifts it looks like we run a ton and the D gets confused. What I am hoping for is 6 plays. Those 6 make 18 plays with it going to the R side, L side and a pass off of it. If you run it strong and weak side thats 12 more with minimal teaching. Am I wrong here. I am 1st year and claim no genius. But i firmly believe that this is the way to go and i believe I can teach my boys to win this way. As I said though I am new to the coaching side and if you Vets tell me to look at something I certainly will. My personal favorite is the Double Slot...i think it is a little more versatile. Again, I believe, but i would like validation that i am on the right path..or, if not, to be put onto a more realistic path.

EXACTLY what I am looking for and wanting to do with the exception that I won't be utilizing any toss. I may just have the Qb sprint to where the back would recieve the ball and hand it. If this does not work the toss will just be scrapped altogther. I have seen so many problems with toss and 11-12 year old level. It worries me greatly. What are your splits on the line and how do they vary? Blocking technique? What would you recommend me look at to learn more? Which DVD? Book? Playbook? What you have described (toss excepted) seems exactly right. Thank you for seeing and understanding and taking time Coach.

Your diagram above is EXACTLY the formation I used to run the run and shoot out of. I know with two TE's it is heavy run oriented as you say, but by flexing the ends I was able to stick more with our passing game. Our set back was a bruising FB at 6-3 245 lbs as a senior and he ran very successfully out of it as well. Being a Mouse Davis disciple at the time, his philosophy of throwing from enzone to endzone suited me just fine and I decided to flex the ends. It didn't me long though to realize that I could be more successful by building a power running team for down close and even for short yardage as those passing lanes really do shrink when you get close!
