Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
the defenders from left to right are 5-backside shade-3-5
You zone it -
PST - E
PSG - solo 3tech
Center - combo shade to Sam
BSG - combo shade to Sam
BST - Mike
But how do you number it IF the center is considered covered by the shade. I've read your posts and covered includes any part of the body, not just playside.
For counting sake, how does the center count a backside shade? Do you count only playside/head up shades? If not you get the following (a problem if you are blocking IZ to the right and have no H or Y for #3):
The CENTER determines who is "0". In your diagrams above (ASSUMING THE PLAY IS TO THE RIGHT) - the Nose (shaded BACKSIDE) is designated as "0" on the IZ, and as "1" on the OZ (thus making the first defender playside - a LBer in your diagrams - "0"). Follow the reasoning below:
On the INSIDE ZONE - the Center considers a BACKSIDE shade as "0", because you MUST get movement on him off the LOS thru the vertical double team - into the lap of the LBer (the ball may come RIGHT THERE).
On the OUTSIDE ZONE - the Center will ignor the backside shade & determines "0" to be the first defender to the CALLSIDE. This is necessary so that you can get up on the MLBer QUICK (Center could NOT get him on OZ flow if he screwed with a backside shade)!!!!!
This is basically the ONLY time (SHADE/BACKSIDE) that the Center has to apply the rules above. The BEST example is the "4-3 OVER-STACK" (which we see so much of):
A) INSIDE ZONE RIGHT: Center declares the shade backside as "0".
LT cuts off Will (unless DE goes in & Will goes out). C & LG zone the shade to Mike. RT & TE zone Sam & DE.
We MUCH PREFER the IZ to the shade side (of course we need another TE/H/FB to help the LT with Will & DE). The play has always been better to the LOWEST# DT 0/Shade as opposed to a 3. In the diagrams YOU drew with 6 in the box - RUN IT TO THE SHADE SIDE!
B) OUTSIDE ZONE RIGHT: Center declares the MLB as "0".
LT = same as IZ. LG cuts the backside shade. C & RG zone Mike & the 3. RT & TE zone Sam & DE.
We prefer the OZ TO the 3 technique side, because RB gets a QUICKER second read on the 3 than a 0/shade IF the DE widens & gives a cutback read.
NOTE: Apply this thinking to the defenses you diagrammed, & you will see how it works out (holds up).
PS: It would take a BOOK to detail all this. The above explanation is the BEST example of how the Center must be the "CAPTAIN OF THE SHIP". IF this doesn't answer your questions - PHONE me at 804-740-4479 (before 10 PM/EDT), OR, email me at: billmountjoy@yahoo.com (I can send you the diagrams).
Bill - I sent you an email, but I want to add these thoughts since they came after the email.
Let's assume the BSLB is a 30 tech and you apply the rule that you can't assign yourself to a man who is not head-up or playside unless his a backside shade (I think you stated something like this once in reference to a bear front). Then the BSG has to assign himself to the frontside LB and the BSG/Center combo is correct.
Or if you count from the outside, the OT designates #2 (his man) and everyone counts down in order from there. You get the right combos although the center has to remember to stay on the shade before coming off for the PSLB.
You numbered the first diagram in your previous post (above) wrong - there cannot be two #1's on the SAME side of the Center. Remember the following. There is always one "0". Then there are TWO "1's" with one being on EACH side of "0". In the FIRST diagram (assuming you are running the IZ RIGHT) - it would be like this:
IZ/RT.
--------1----1
----2-----0---2--3
-----O-O-C-O-O
Here (on IZ right) - LT has 2 alone. Off LG & Ctr. zone from 0 to BS/1. ON RG & RT zone from 1 to 2. #3 must be handled by someone else (since you have 5 blockers for "6 in the box" - they have you OUTNUMBER to the PLAYSIDE, & football is a "GAME OF NUMBERS"). It is a "no-brainer" in this diagram to run IZ LEFT! As I said - we ALWAYS run IZ to the lowest # DT (#0 as opposed to #3). Don't try to fit a square peg into a round hole!
The SECOND of your diagrams is numbered correctly for OZ right!
When the Colts count from outside-in (IZ only) they end up blocking the SAME man as if you count from inside-out. EVERYBODY (except the Colts) counts from inside-out. If the FOURTH man (counting from ouside in (in the Colts method) is on any part oif the Center - they DO NOT run IZ that side).
Just remember: Vs a backside shade - make him "1" on OZ (Center zones with ON G), & "0" on IZ (Center zones with off G). Don't make it any more complicated than THAT. See email I sent - it is detailed!
PHONE IF QUESTIONS. It is hard IN-SEASON to find typing time. Everybody around here is in "Two-A-Days"!

PS: The Center DOES NOT get vertical movement on a backside shade on OZ. He DOES on IZ.
That is correct (about how to handle a BACKSIDE DE). What I was referring to was that you (if you run it to the right in your first diagram) by rules would have had an unblocked defender PLAYSIDE!
PHONE if you are still confused with the "NUMBERING" - I can explain MUCH BETTER by phone. 804-740-4479
