Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
We don't run the veer so I don't really get to look at it as much as I'd like. My question about the point method regards penetration. It is my understanding that the point method relies on the concept of a line surge. For the QB to get to practiced mesh point the guard MUST get a push.
Have you ever run into a stud DT that would not get knocked back or a kid that dropped a power block? Did it hurt your ability to run the play? I know you can do some things to run to the other side. One of the things that scares me about the point as opposed ride is what happens if your guard gets stood up. It just seems like you still have a fighting chance at positive yards and your mesh point is protected if the mesh happens behind the line of scrimmage.
Other than that concern I think that the point method makes more sense.
GOOD CONCERN COACH! However, in the point method what you have to understand is that NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS, GUARD GETS STOOD UP, ETC. it makes no difference. It only expedites the QB getting to his next read! By that I mean this: as the QB takes the snap AND HIS ESCAPE STEP, he draws his left foot to his right Toe and WITHOUT STOPPING OR GOING TO A FULL GATHER, but on rhythm he follows the line surge and if it is to be a give to the dive back, he merely extends his arms directly at the read man keeping two pressure points on the ball at all times. IF IT IS A GIVE, THE QB LEAVES THE BALL IN THE POINTED POSITION AND THE DIVE BACK MERELY CLOSES HIS CRADLE DOWN ON THE BALL AND RUNS HIS PATH. As the QB gives, he releases the ball into the cradle of the dive back WITHOUT THE DIVE BACK EVER REACHING FOR THE BALL OR TOUCHING IT IN ANY WAY PRIOR TO CLOSING DOWN ON IT.
Now, for the example of the guard getting stood up and we have an ISV called: As the QB sees too many arses in the hole and the running lane is not there, he simply pulls the ball and holds it 6 inches in front of his numbers within the framework of his body and with a gentle rocking motion gets on to his next read and ready to make another decision rather to pitch or keep. He has completely eliminated any reaching across his body and back to the dive back which to me was always uncomfortable and unnatural to me, yet having to keep his head forward on his read man all the while! His body is all facing the same way, he can move faster this way!!!

If penetration does occur and the QB's path becomes bubbled, (it shouldn't if your line is firing off as it should) the QB is not encumbered by the dive back having his hands on the ball too. He is free to get back down field as soon as he evades the penetration. The sooner the better, as the greater distance between a QB and his read man always favors the defender in that he is now much more capable of that nemisis that plagues all option QB's- THE FUZZY READ WHICH CAUSES BAD DECISIONS TO BE MADE.
