Coach Campbell,
We play alot of Wing T type teams that like to run the Jet Sweep to the split end side out of the old Delaware "Red & Blue" alignments. To compliment the sweep, they run a fullback isolation on the same side as the sweep and they may also run the old counter trey to the tight end side when teams over pursue. What type of front and coverage do you feel is bettered suited to defend against it?
William, I authored three pamphlets on the jet sweep and sold pamphlets to coaches all over the world. I ran the jet sweep back in 1998 when nobody else did. The reason why the jet sweep fad is dying is because teams that force the sweep back inside statistically eliminated the offense.
I completely agree that the belly play (fullback isolation) is a great complement to the jet; however, if you play with an invert (90 tech) who is trained to turn the sweep back inside, a tight-5 technique that gets his head and face in the gap with his hands on the OT to eliminate the belly, and a trail player backside who attacks the upfield shoulder of the ball carrier, you eliminate the jet. Man free coverage is the best way to attack the jet, because if they go 4 verticals, you outnumber them deep.
If you 1. force the sweep inside; 2. have DE's that control the C gap by getting their hands on the OT; 3. eliminate 4 verticals, YOU ELIMINATE THE JET OFFENSE! Eliminate the three top concepts of the offense and you will succeed.
I look forward to further discussion on this topic. If you have any other concerns, Email me at CellaFBall@aol.com.
