How mad should I be?

I WOULD BEG TO DIFFER COACH SCOTT. If the ball has been SNAPPED prior to the whistle, the play is considered underway, no matter what play it is, a kick or otherwise unless there has been a rules change I am not familiar with. ONE BACK has the national Federation for high schools rule book, how about telling us what the rules say Bill? Your absolutely right if you are referring to the fact that the call was made and there is no appeals process available, it becomes a moot point and the call would stand.

Not ALL States play by National Federation Rules. This should be brought up IMMEDIATELY with your STATE High School Association.

I may be wrong but I believe that the play is underway as you correctly state. HOWEVER, the play is ENDED by the whistle which was blown during the kick, BEFORE the the kick was made.

The side-judge screwed up, but the ref would have been incorrect to award the point which not had been good prior to the whistle.

Does this make sense to anyone?

MY UNDERSTANDING of the rules is that there is a difference between the gun/siren to end a game/half and the whistle of an official. Of course, the last play of the game or quarter will continue to conclusion if the ball was snapped before time expired. HOWEVER, if an official blows his whistle mistakenly before the play should have been over, that play is dead right then and there.

For example, the QB is running with ball on second and 6. He is hit one yard past the LOS and an official blows the whistle anticipating that his knee will touch down, at the same time, the QB pitches to the back who takes off towards the endzone. The referee realizes the mistake of blowing the whistle too early. The offense will not be awarded a TD. They will have their choice of counting that down and taking the gain up to the point where the ball was when the whistle was blown (3rd and 5) or to have 2nd and 6 over again from the previous spot. Even if everyone in the stadium can see that he WOULD have scored, no TD unless the ball carrier gets the ball across the goalline before the whistle.

My thinking is that the same would hold true in the poster's situation where the whistle blew after the snap but before the ball went through the uprights.

National Federation rules are not exactly the same as NCAA rules. MOST (but but not all) High School Federations in US play by National Federation rules!

I cannot speak specifically about Federation Rules. However, I came across nothing in the Fed rules I have that addressed this specifically. I also have a 'manual' on the differences in NCAA & Fed rules. Nothing in there about this being a "difference."

If I'm not mistaken, I believe the only states that follow NCAA rules for high school football are Mass. & Tx. Now, there are a few things that are in the NCAA rules that they don't do at the high school level in TX ... such as the color of gloves, kickoff yardline, # of balls to be checked, etc. ... mostly 'minor' things that really have little bearing on the "rules" of game play (other than kickoff, of course)

I figured I knew the ruling already. I agree, the tape needs to be sent in so that this does not happen to some one else. But our head coach is dragging his feet on this one. Doesn't want ot ruffle the feathers I guess. I was just venting frustrations because the past few years, we ALWAYS lose the close ones, even when our kids play great, we find a way to lose.

Phoenix is up by Syracuse... north suburbs, right?

Mike Shanahan is an absolute master of calling time-outs at the last second.

For those who didn't see the game, the Broncos called a time-out just before the play started, but the play inadvertently continued and the Raiders "made" the FG. When they tried again after the TO, they missed it.

Whistle stops the play. Always.

That being said here's MY OPINION:

These sideline timeouts that get whistled while the kick is on the way are a horse-crap abuse of the rule.

Two NFL teams have lost because of those timeouts. Strategic as they may be, it's still shady in my opinion. People's jobs are at stake.

Cheektawoga huh? My buddy Deric Demyanic played there back around 1997-8. Phoenix has been a middle of the road team for years. Good enough to pull off some big wins, but always folding when the pressure is on to make the playoffs. Heres a bit of trivia I think ( I could be wrong): As of 2005 Phoenix is the only team in Section 3 (at least class B) that has not made the playoffs since they started the modern playoff setup (which I have been told was set up at the end of the 70's, or ealy 80's)!
