Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
I have been running option out of the gun for 2 years now after running it from under center for 3. The biggest problem I have encountered in the read key being able to come off of the dive to QB. We run ISV, midline, speed and inside trap. I have already adusted my FB's path to backside foot of center on midline.
I have read the forum and gotten great information, I decided I finally need to post a few times.
Coach Mishler, my best guess is that the execution between the center snap, quarterback, and dive back is too slow. Something needs to be done to make the play more urgent. In addition, what is your quarterback reading? Most triple option teams, regardless if it is under center or gun read the far shoulder of the quarterback. Your quarterback should be giving the ball to the dive back unless the read key turns his far shoulder to take the dive.
Also, are you the same Coach Mishler that coaches at Iroquois his school near Erie, PA? Let me know. Thank you.

No, I am not the same coach Mishler from Erie. I am near Chicago.
Thanks for the reply. I have had the same thoughts as far as the urgency of the play is concerned. I have changed my dive back's path a few times, finally settling on inside hip of the PSG for ISV and backside foot of the center for midline. I have tried a few things for the QB's read. I used to be a srtictly read the far shoulder guy when we were under center. We were having some issues so I started teaching more of the "is his head on the ball" kind of read.
I also tried to play with the back's timing b/c I thought that maybe the ride was not quite long enough for the QB to make a decision.
The bottom line is that we haven't been reading it with near the percentage I would like. What do you think is an appropriate percentage of correct reads to expect from a HS QB reading ISV and Midline?
NEVER EXPECT ANYTHING BUT 100% CORRECT READS FROM YOUR QB, EVER!!! IF YOU ACCEPT ANYTHING LESS, YOUR DEALING WITH MEDIOCRITY. A QB WHO CAN'T MAKE THE CORRECT READ IS NOT READING, HE IS GUESSING AND THAT IS JUST NOT ACCEPTABLE.
NOW, A TACKLE IN A 50 FRONT WHO ALIGNS IN A STRAIGHT UP 4, IS THE NEMISIS OF ANY OPTION QB RUNNING THE VEER, AS IT FORCES HIM TO MAKE A DECISION. IF HE ALIGNS IN A 4i OR A 5, A CORRECTLY TRAINED QB WILL MAKE HIS DECISION IN THE PSL TO EITHER GIVE OR KEEP. IT'S THAT SIMPLE.
THAT'S WHY MY TOP PREREQUISITE FOR A # 1 QB IS HE BE ABLE TO READ IT BETTER THAN ANY OTHER CANDIDATE. HE MAY NOT BE THE BEST ATHLETE, NOR THE QUICKEST OR FASTEST, BUT IF HE CAN READ IT CONSISTENTLY RIGHT, HE IS MY MAN IF I'M RUNNING THE VEER!

Coach Mishler, call University of Charleston Head Coach, Tony DeMeo at (304) 340-3734. He is the MASTER of the shotgun veer, the best triple option coach in the world (in my OPINION), and will give you a few minutes of his time. I suggest you do it Thursday or Friday as he will not be AS busy. He will guide you to the best way to do this. Whatever he suggests, do it and STAY THE COURSE! He has it figured out and will tell you why it needs to be done that way.
Good luck!

IMO the problems you are having can be solved by going back under center. I do not like the veer from the gun and the dive not hitting nearly fast enough is the main reason. By being under center and utilizing the point technique you will allow your dive to hit at lightening fast speed! I would suggest contacting Ken Sparks and Mike Turner at Carson Newman college. I believe they are the as good as they come in the world of option football.
