Coaches,
I am not sure why I am sharing this, but I feel bad and I hope someone who has possibly been in my shoes can offer some insight.
This past Friday, during a time out, I got very upset with a player. This particular player had been talking back to coaches all season and telling us how to do our job. If it was up to me he would have been off our team weeks ago, but the head coach put up with him. This night this kid was in rare form and during a time out he takes off his helmet and tells me who I should take off our defense. I get upset with the kid and told him, "to put on his helmet and shut up!" The kid responds by telling me to, "take him off the f#cking defense!" I lost it with the kid and we start yelling at each other until coaches step in between us. The player is taken off the field.
Now I know I was wrong and let the kid get the best of me, but I could not take anymore of him talking back. After the game I apologized to the players and other coaches, I felt so bad for the example I set for our other players.
The school decided to let both me and the player go and I have to respect that because I was wrong. My problem is I have never done anything remotely like this before and I don't want to be labeled as some hot head coach who wants to fight kids. Has anyone been in a situation like this? If so how did you overcome it. I don't know what to do...right now I am sick that I will not finish these last two week. There are some seniors that I really wanted to be there with for their last game.
