Here is the situation:
Last game of the season. Traditional 8th grade rivalry game between two middle schools from the same district.
We're up 20-0 at halftime and start liberally subbing at the outset of the second half. We are not required to play everyone, but we try to play as many kids as we can, and being the last game of the season, we're making an extra effort to do so.
The opponents keep their first team in throughout the second half and scores twice by the middle of the fourth quarter, making the score 28-16. They have been onside kicking most of the game. Our "hands" team recovers the ball. We decide that we don't want to risk them getting any closer, so we reinsert our first teamers.
We're running a "four minute drill" to run the clock, but get bogged down on our opponents' 42 yard line. The situation is 4th and about 4 to go with 3 minutes left in the game.
We call a pass out of a "five wide" formation yet the defense stacks 8 men on the line of scrimmage. Our fullback motions from the backfield to the boundary and is completely uncovered as he runs a wheel down the sideline. Needless to say, the QB hits him in stride and the FB walks into the endzone for a TD. Final score 34-16 (we win).
In the end, we played every single player on our roster while the opponent played their first team the entire game.
Was it "unsportsmanlike" to reinsert the first team? Did we "run up the score"?
IMHO, inserting our first team was protecting our lead. And we shouldn't be blamed for "running up the score" when they can't defend our play. But I am curious what other coaches think.
