Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
First year HC at school. Very difficult year on and off the field. Delt with more situations (discipline, motivation, organization) than in the previous 20 years (10 as a college asst, 10 as a HS HC). I knew going in it was a tough situation and I am willing to build the foundation. Problem: As I organized the staff last spring, I was able to bring in 2 of "my guys", however, due to several unfortunate circumstances, my DC choices fell through. I was "forced" to promote in house. The coach was bright, articulate and seemed willing to learn, but very green. Throughout the season I had many accountability issues, loyalty issues and general professional issues with him. Bottom line is our personalities clashed and he refused to conform or comply. Adminsitration backs me all the way from the Superintendent - Principal to the AD, I have autonomy to hire & fire within professional / district guidelines. I met with the guy almost daily - gave him very specific written job descriptions - met with him and the AD and spelled out the problem etc etc. Do I flat out fire him now - do I continue to meet and work with him during the offseason or do I wait until Im sure I can fill the position and let him know he can continue in a lesser role?
LOYALTY issues bring about the automatic "death penalty"!
Remember what the great Paul Brown said about assistants:
(PAUL BROWN) Example of workers in a bank: “you can teach people to add and divide, but you can’t teach them to be honest”! (loyalty MUST be inherent).
Bill addressed the MAIN ISSUE, as loyality is the PRIME REQUISITE WE ALL LOOK FOR. Could be he is one of these newer breed guys who just don't get it yet, and needs some real seasoning under and experienced coach on the JV level. If he has other issues that do not meet your standards, and will not listen, just get rid of him as that kind is a cancer to the team!

Fire him immediately because your career is being set back every day that you don't. Loyalty and accessibility are the two prerequisites for coaching high school and college football. You can't make someone loyal and you can't make someone be around all the time if they have other responsibilities. Get rid of him now!

I'm with Lou, Tiger and Oneback, Loyalty is the key to building a solid foundation. Besides life is to short and our job to tough to always be looking over our back. Coach CAmpbell
Coaches;
I am having the same problems as Kr. I was named head coach the weekend before practice started in august (I was the J.V. Coach). At the beginning of the year, there was resistance, defiance and every thing in between. The previous coach let them do what ever they wanted, and they were a nightmare on campus. I have exausted myself to this point to try to enstill discipline to the seniors. I have benched and removed "stars", had countless meetings, have been cussed out at a parent meeting (because my rules were "too strict") I was even verbally and near physically attacked by a mother who's son didn't get to play for continued defiance. It has Improved a long way, but no where near where we need to be.
Here are my problems:
1)We have two games left in the season. We started 6-0 mostly because of a softer pre season schedule and partly because we do have athletes. We are now 6-2 and need to win the next two against somewhat equal opponents. We still have horrible on the field habits, which came to light friday night (two special teams TDs). The kids still want to "walk" through practice at 1/2 speed. It has actually gotten worse now that we are into our tougher opponents. Anything hard we seem to give upIf I bench "offenders" I will pretty much have to forfiet the game because it is most of our guys. Is there anything else I can do this late in the season.
2) Part of the prob is my assistant coaches. I inherited the varsity staff and it seems that they do little to enforce my message. One assistant always seems to get phone calls from players/parents every time I discipline kids. He is a nice guy but I don't know if he is completely on board. How do I fire him at the end of the season?
3) My O-line coach is horrible. My kids block for 1-2 seconds and then stop. They do the same thing on pass pro. They stay high, etc. I am going to take over the O-line more than likely. Is there any thing I can do this late in the season to try to mitigate this problem? (Drills, etc) I realize that it can't be fixed completely. Thanks in advance.
#2 MEANWHILE - YOU take over the major teaching NOW (run more "TEAM" type stuff than individual or small group drills - so that way YOU can run the show - not the assistants)! YOU (as "HFC") will get what YOU demand - no more, no less! If you DON'T demand (or can't command) effort from your players you will lose control of YOUR team!
#3 Have a slow whistle in practice & make everyone get to the ball (defense). On offense we stress getting 6 seconds effort (below):
THE “INTERVAL” THAT CAUSES GREATNESS
THREE THINGS COMPRISE THE “GREAT INTERVAL”
A. EFFORT +
B. EXECUTION +
C. ENDURANCE
“INTERVAL”
THE LONGEST PLAY IN FOOTBALL – A LONG KICK OFF RETURN - IS APPROXIMATELY 12 SECONDS IN LENGTH.
THE SHORTEST IS A NO GAIN DIRECT RUN. IT’S DURATION ABOUT 2.5 SECONDS.
THE AVERAGE PLAY IS NEAR TO 6 SECONDS.
WHEN WE SAY “INTERVAL”, WE ARE TALKING ABOUT THAT TIME PERIOD FROM THE BALL SNAP THAT IGNITES US, TO 6 SECONDS LATER. NOTHING ELSE REALLY MATTERS IN A GAME.
ON THE AVERAGE, OFFENSE RUNS 50 OR SO PLAYS A GAME. DEFENSE RUNS NEARLY THE SAME.
WE ARE TALKING ABOUT 6 x 50 OR 300 SECONDS, OR APPROXIMATELY 5 MINUTES. WHEN WE SAY “INTERVAL”. WE ARE ASKING IF YOU WILL GIVE OF EFFORT, EXECUTION, AND ENDURANCE FOR ------- HIGH SCHOOL JUST 5 MINUTES WORTH A GAME (10 MINUTES IF YOU GO BOTH WAYS). A 6 SECOND “INTERVAL” BY EVERY PLAYER ON EVERY PLAY WILL MAKE US A GREAT TEAM!!!
WE WILL BECOME WHAT WE DO. DO THE “INTERVAL”!!!!!
P.S. ANOTHER WAY TO THINK OF THIS IS THAT FOOTBALL IS A SERIES OF “6 SECOND WARS”, OR “6 SECOND SELLOUTS”! YOU GO TO WAR FOR 6 SECONDS, THEN YOU HAVE 25 SECONDS TO REST BETWEEN PLAYS, AND GET READY FOR THE NEXT “6 SECOND WAR”. ANYONE NOT IN CONDITION TO DO THIS IS NOT ONLY HURTING THE TEAM, BUT NEEDS MORE INTENSIVE CONDITIONING TO REACH THIS LEVEL THAT IT TAKES TO BE A WINNER!!!
“HERE AT GREEN BAY, WE HAVE THE PHILOSOPHY THAT A GAME IS WON OR LOST ON TWO OR THREE PLAYS DURING THE 60 MINUTES THE TEAMS ARE ON THE FIELD. NOW, NO ONE KNOWS WHEN THESE PLAYS ARE COMING UP. THEREFORE, YOU HAVE TO BE IN THE BEST POSSIBLE CONDITION – BOTH MENTAL AND PHYSICAL – SO YOU CAN GO 100% ON ALL THE PLAYS” (VINCE LOMBARDI – GREATEST COACH IN PRO FOOTBALL HISTORY).
I WOULD ADD TO BILL'S EXCELLENT ADVICE THE FOLLOWING:
If you want to keep the job, and I assume you do, FIND OUT HOW FAR THE ADMINISTRATION IS PREPARED TO BACK YOU. Are they willing to sit down with you, listen to your DOCUMENTED complaints,
then stand behind you 100%, or are they the type who give you lip service and really will not back you when you really need them to do just that??? IT'S HIGH TIME, IN MY OPINION, THAT THEY QUIT LISTENING SO MUCH TO PARENTS AND GIVE THE REAL AUTHORITY BACK TO THE COACHES AND TEACHERS!!!
If in fact, they will back you to the limit, do what it takes you to do to get through the remainder of this season. THEN, AFTER A COOLING OFF PERIOD OF ALL INVOLVED, INSTIGATE YOUR PROGRAM TO THE MAX!!! HOLD A PARENTS ONLY MEETING WITH THEM AND LET THEM KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU WILL EXPECT FROM THEIR SONS STARTING IMMEDIATELY WITH THE OFF SEASON REGIMEN, IN NO UNCERTAIN TERMS. LET THEM KNOW EXACTLY WHAT THEY CAN EXPECT FROM YOU AT ALL TIMES. IF JOHHNIE DOESN'T WANT TO SUBMIT HIMSELF TO YOUR RULES WITHOUT QUESTIONING THEM, TALKING BACK IN DEFIANCE TO YOU AND YOUR STAFF, TELL HIM NOT TO BOTHER EVEN COMING OUT FOR THE TEAM. IT IS A PRIVILEGE TO PLAY HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL AND NOT A RIGHT, AND THOSE WHO DO COME OUT AND REMAIN WITH THE TEAM WILL BE THE ONES WHO WILL COMPLY WILLINGLY WITH YOUR DIRECTIVES, PERIOD!!! LET THEM KNOW THAT YOU HAVE WORKED AT YOUR PROFESSION LONG ENOUGH TO BE GIVEN THE GREAT RESPONSIBILITY OF BEING THE HEAD OF THE FOOTBALL PROGRAM AND YOU ARE GOING TO JUSTIFY THAT FAITH IN YOU BY RUNNING YOUR PROGRAM AS YOU KNOW IT SOULD BE RUN. LAY IT OUT FOR THEM, WITH DISCRETION OF COURSE, BUT LET THEM KNOW IT IS GOING TO BE YOUR WAY OR THE HIGHWAY!!! IF THEY DON'T LIKE IT, TOO BAD!!! ( OF COURSE YOU DON'T SAY THAT, BUT YOU STRONGLY IMPLY IT!)
HIRE A BRAND NEW STAFF ASAP!!! DO NOT HESITATE TO KEEP A PRESENT MEMBER OF THE STAFF IF HE HAS SHOWN THE ATTRIBUTES YOU DESIRE, WHY SHOULD HE LOSE HIS JOB BECAUSE THE REST ARE A BUNCH OF DISLOYAL JERKS???
Set about building REAL TEAM MORALE AND TEAM UNITY ASAP! Encourage the players to really start caring about each other both on and off the field! When they do this, you will notice a real upswing in on field performance as they start jelling. When this happens you then will have the beginnings of a real team!

By stating your credentials, as both a well experienced HS and college level coach, you have been around long enough to know that your gut instincts are usually right. Go with what you know, coach, and start running it YOUR way and never give in to any kind of pressure that would cause you to ever sacrifice your own principles. THERE IS ALWAYS ANOTHER PLACE THAT IS LOOKING FOR A REAL COACH AND NOT A PUPPET!

Now I haven't been at this as long as Tiger Coach Easton or a couple of others on this thead...But one thing I have learned in my years of coaching football is that a team can fall apart very quickly when those involved are not of one mind. Loyalty is key in the staff at all times. I've saw one of the more talented teams I've been a part of when the head coach, OC, OL coach, and DL coach started in on one another about philosophies--mainly it was the OL coach vs the other three. The kids started to divide and we fell apart after that.
Also with the offseason and the future of the program...be upfront, honest, and put it in writing. Work out an off-season points program for the kids involving workouts, grades, camps/clinics, etc. If a player doesn't make a certain level, he doesn't play varsity. Keep it tough but attainable. Just make sure that, as was said previously, admin is on board. And if they are not backing you in your decisions, get out now. Things won't get better--you'll only start to fall into thier problems. My guess is that admin will be on board if the team is seen as a discipline problem around the school. Changing the culture around a HS football team is not easy, and is often quite messy. Unfortunately one of the great things of our schools--our traditions, also make change an unwelcome thought. Keep at it and good luck!

There is nothing that will show a man's true character like the 2 yard line.
Thank you all for your insights and knowledge. I have been a consistent contributor on this board for 2 years and I value the vast experience and opinions. I do have a clear and formulated plan, I just wanted to get opinions from this board. Thanks again and keep up the great work.
IT IS GOOD TO HEAR THAT YOU HAVE A PLAN!!! BEST OF LUCK IN GETTING IT INSTALLED TO YOUR LIKEING. WITH YOUR EXPERIENCE, YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO AND WHEN TO DO IT. PLEASE LET US KNOW OF YOUR PROGRESS AS YOU GO ALONG, WE WOULD REALLY LIKE TO KNOW.

Excellent advice as usual. I have used the 6 second principle AND went to small group during our offensive sessions. I have taken the RBs and OL together during pass pro and inside run sessions. I have already noticed a difference. We are staying on blocks, and you said, DEMANDED that they do so. Granted, our line is not all world, but any improvement is nice. I have come to the conclusion (in part from your advice and part from observation) that I had gotten too caught up in caring about what everyone else thought--assistants, admin, parents, etc). I also got caught up in trying to fix all the administrative loose ends that were in shambles when I took over (finances, T-shirts, fundrasier refunds, taking care of sponsors, etc) The bad thing is that I know better. . .. . The good thing is that ALL of this is over--I'm not even going to wait until next year.
This week I have already noticed a change in attitude from our team by being more direct and hands on. with the line Although a few have quit (I am too tough) the majority have seemed to almost welcome the fact that I have been involved in areas of the team. I have also already met with the AD to tell him that we will need to clean house a little in terms of assistants. He asked some questions, but generally seemed supportive.
I want to thank the coaches who responded to this question, especially Coach Easton and Coach Mountjoy. As always, your advice is right on. . . it is nice to have veterans like you helping us who are new at running a program.
Really glad to hear you were able to implement your new plan immediately and did not drag your feet in getting right to it! VERY GLAD TO HEAR THAT THE DEAD WOOD ELIMIATED THEMSELVES BY QUITTING AS THEY ALWAYS DO. Very glad to hear that the real players are responding to your more hands on approach! That tells me you have a good bunch of kids to build on.
With your experience I knew you would handle it just right. GET THROUGH THIS SEASON AND THEN AFTER A BRIEF BUT NECESSARY REST FOR THE WHOLE TEAM AND STAFF, GET RIGHT BACK AFTER IT AFTER THE HOLIDAYS. Glad to hear that your AD listened about your concerns for a few new staff memebers!
Sincere thanks for letting us know how it is going. Keep us updated as time permits if you will. If you have questions as you go along, I'm sure we can all put our heads together and come up with a satisfactory answer for you.

Well, Rome wasn't built in a day. . . We lost our third in a Row 23-6. We shot ourselves in the foot with penalties. We had a couple of injuries early (of all things to our OL!!) We are in a real tough league, but we also didn't play well. Some of the linemen did better, but others were awful. Last game is Friday. . playing for pride now against cross-town Rival and a chance for a respectable 7-3 record.
On top of all the things I mentioned previously, I should have also said that this was our schools first full Varsity season. Last year, our Varsity suited up only Juniors. Our school opened in 2005 with sophmores and a jv team. After two years, the original H.C. was fired for league violations, HORRIBLE ethics (the kids got away with drinking on campus and all sorts of stuff), and poor leadership skills--TWO DAYS BEFORE THE SEASON!! I took the job only because I didn't want it to go to the 24 year old PE teacher who was unqualified (I do like my teaching job here)
I will never forget this year. . . I have been cussed out at a parent meeting, yelled at during halftime for benching a player, called a racist, had some players protest my hire (well, our old H.c release, at least) our headsets broke, ran out of equipment, we were financially bankrupt, had numerous phone calls about my discipline policy, been told to run the ball more, pass the ball more, run more trick plays, etc. Also, the very first Monday of Double days in August (and teacher workdays) a Drunk Driver crashed into my car AND my wifes car . . .. Totaling them both!!!!!
I will need to sleep for two weeks straight. . . then I will get back to work. One thing is for sure, I certainly have learned a TON from this experience. If nothing else, it certainly has made me tougher and battle hardened!!!
I've been following this thread from the beginning and have had some of these issues and it seems to be a theme at most schools not just mine!!! I have had the coaching issues and parent issues with loyalty from coaches and parents wanting input, etc.
I also met with my Prinicpal and AD and they supported any decision I wanted to make, they just emphasized the issue of doing evaluations at the end of the season and meeting with my coaches. I did that last year(end of season) and this year we have had a much better communication amongst staff, better coaching with players and no questions in loyalty. I think the evaluations helped and I was very honest with each coach. I definitely think if you want to keep some of the staff on board, which I did, let them know your expectations and help them become better coaches with clinics in-house and outside clinics, books, videos, etc. I've been a HC for three seasons now and we went 1-10, 0-11 and we are now 5-4(with two of the losses in :38 seconds and :34 seconds, yuck!) and the staff as well as the players have definitely come together over the three seasons and it shows with our record, effort and attitude each week. We have had only two coaches come and go during this time.
I think this coaching site with the different opinions and experience of each coach gives the best input on coaching issues and X's and O's on the web. I'm glad to be able to read and post with so many coaches that have greeat ideas and opinions. I look forward in following this thread and many others on this site.
Thanks for all the help and input. Just following this thread has helped me without being directly involved or part of it from the beginning.
Adding to the reply from above. Do you as coaches do player evaluations for all players? Do you just do Varsity? I want to do player evaluations, I just would like some ideas(end of season, off-season, etc.).
I do meet with each Varsity player mid-season individually and go over everything from football, school, family, life, etc. This is a closed door meeting and nothing leaves the room. I've done this all three years and have had some great talks with players. I pick a Monday during half season and give each player as much time needed, some three minutes, some 20 minutes, each player is different. Anyone ever do this?
It was always my practice to do this throughout the season, as well as the off season. I did not designate a specific time as you do, but always strived to make it an ongoing thing as a regular part of the program.
Always encouraged the coaches to stay around after practice, in the locker room and just shoot the breeze with their guys, etc. You would really be surprised what you can learn about a young man withh THIS method.
My door was always open to the players and staff and I have burned the "midnight oil" more times than I care to recall at sessions with both. But, to keep the "air clean" and morale at it's best, I found no better way.
