Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
I have respected so much that I have read on this forum that I have to post this out there for all of you to consider.
I will have 3 returning DL (4 man front) that will be seniors and one new DT that will be a junior. They understand the tradition of our program and what I have been able to do in the past as our DC.
Being told what has been in the past and working to become part of that legacy are two different things in the mind of some of our kids.
Here is what I would like each of you to consider: they have been told by me that the last time we reached the state championship game here in IL(2003), we had a DL that allowed me to do so much more with the guys behind them. We dominated our opponents on defense! The guys behind them now are flat out workers...tell them in your own way, AS YOU WOULD BE SPEAKING TO THEM, the importance of a dominant group of down lineman to the success of a football team.
They have heard it enough from me and our HC...I want them to hear it from others!!!
This is older than the game of football, but for everything worthwhile - "YOU HAVE TO PAY THE PRICE"! You can say this a million different ways, but it always comes out the same.
Bear Bryant listed the 3 most important things you teach your players as:
3 THINGS YOU MUST TEACH YOUR PLAYERS IF YOU ARE TO BE SUCCESSFUL:
A) WORK ETHIC (HOW TO WORK)
B) NEVER GIVE UP ATTITUDE
C) TO BELIEVE IN THEMSELVES
PS: If in the OUT-OF-SEASON - you put them thru Weight Training, Mat Drills (for toughness), AND a running program (we have one that we believe in) - you will SEE how committed they are.
REMEMBER: "WELL DONE IS ALWAYS BETTER THAN WELL SAID"!!!!!!!
One thing I did with my lineman this year during the winter was by invitation only. We started the Kennel club. The lineman worked out together during the winter months. It was just us. It really helped them bond and it made them feel important. They were the only ones that do it. Lineman get no glory, only blame. You want them to be selfless but you also need to find ways to make them feel special. We went out to lunch together after practice a few times. It was just the key lineman, varsity guys. I was tough as hell on them a lot in practice and in games but they can deal with that better when they know that you care about them. I also think it is easy for them to be selfless when they feel like their efforts are at least appreciated by their position coach.
In short, get these guys to bond with each other and with you! They will play harder and better.
I ALWAYS HAD GOOD LUCK WITH MY D LINE BY MAKING THEM UNDERSTAND THAT COVERAGES CAN ONLY BE BASED ON WHAT FRONTS THEY COMPLIMENT. THE MORE FRONTS THAT THEY COULD MASTER, THE MORE COVERAGES WE CAN EMPLOY ON ANY GIVEN NIGHT. WHEN THAT COHEASIVENESS COMES TO THE DEFENSE THEY WILL FULLY REALIZE JUST HOW IMPORTANT THIS IS TO FORMULATING A WINNING DEFENSIVE GAME PLAN. THIS IS EXTRA IMPORTANT NOW IN MY MIND WITH ALL THE DISGUISE LOOKS THAT DEFENSES EMPLOY. JUST MY WAY AS ALWAYS.

Coach Mountjoy,
Thanks for your reply, great as usual. I want to also thank you for your detailed explanations of the robber coverage in the past. I have heard Bud Foster speak on the topic as well. We used those concepts in our last season game, along with "splitting" SAM and WILL to stop an unbelievable midline QB! Will need to go to it again to stop two outstanding HB's that will be new on our schedule next year.
We have an excellent weight training program in place as well as what I call "threshold training". The threshold training involves using many of the UNDERGROUND STRENGTH COACH training methods (flipping tires, pull/drag tires, sand bag and kettle ball movements). Would you car to elaborate on what you have done in the past when you stated you have used MAT DRILLS to develop toughness. I heard Coach Reicht for UGA speak about their MAT DRILLS before, what have you done?
What type of routines have you used for your off season running program that you also mentioned.
Thanks as always.
Could you send me any info on robber and "off man" technique via email?
