I'm interested in hearing other's ideas on this topic. I coach at the JV level and have at this school for 3 seasons now, entering my 4th offseason. We have the philosophy here that the main goal of the JV program is to prepare players for Varsity football, not to win games. Not to say winning isn't important, the game of football can become a lot like drudgery if you aren't winning and that will drive guys out of the program just as quickly as not playing. To use a basketball term, we tend to have a longer bench than the Varsity program. This gives more guys game experience as well as giving us a chance to coach and give tips on the sideline during the game. With the DBs, I like to have 3 solid corners that we can rotate in and rely on with one possibly being able to shift over to FS as well. 4 man rotations at DTs and 3-4 man rotations at DE have been used as well. We don't rotate as much on offense though and that disappoints me a bit. Maybe continuity is needed more on offense, making it more difficult to substitute on that side of the ball. To illustrate my point I went through our depth chart for this season and charted whether each player played offense, defense, or special teams on a regular basis. On a 36 man roster 32 played one of the three regularly and 27 playing two of the three regularly. We have had success in terms of W/L (3 year record of 14-7-1). It seems to me from watching scouting film the past few seasons that other teams don't do as much rotating except on special teams. Are there other coaches out there who go with the "longer bench" philosophy on JV that we have?
