Lately, for some reason unknown to me, I've found myself thinking about my Dad and the type of influence he has had on my life in all areas, but especially in the realm of sports. I thought that would be a great topic for discussion on the board here. Who got you started in football or sports in general? Who influenced you at a young age to become an athlete/coach?
I'll start it off. My dad was definitely the biggest influence in my life in terms of sports. He was an excellent high school basketball player and played in college. His college career was cut short due to family obligations, but I remember as a kid going to watch him play in rec league games. Both my parents believed heavily in the benefits of sports and signed up all 4 of us kids in my family for sports as soon as we were old enough for them. My dad coached all of us at one point or another, even coaching my sister's Little League softball team at one point. He would take us to minor league baseball games. He coached me in Pop Warner football for 2 years, Little League and Babe Ruth level baseball for a total of 4 years. He played basketball in the driveway with us. I remember vividly that even if he was grilling dinner in the backyard he would hit groundballs or throw a football to us in between checking on the stuff on the grill. He referees basketball and I used to go with him to watch the games while he reffed on nights that I didn't have something else going on, even through my high school years. The one year he was the HC of the Pop Warner team I played on we made a tradition that I kept with me through high school, college and still do as a coach now. Several hours before the game started we would go down to the field and walk around the field, sometimes talking about the game, sometimes just thinking about it. I still do a walk of the field every game day. It's tough for away games, but I make sure I have some quiet time to myself to reflect and think about what is coming up. I owe my life in sports to my Dad.
