Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
Coaches,
Interested in discussing the way some of you run the sweep out of the gun. We have run in with fast rotating combo blocks and have had some success. I would like to know how some coaches set up the sweep with cracks and pulls.(fsg or fst).
Glaze
PST-Align off the ball as much as possible. Flash pass set the defensive end. Outside release of the split end's block and block the secondary.
PSG-Reach to the play-side and release second level as quick as possible, pull if there is no B-Gap defender. Rip through if possible.
C-Reach block the first play-side defender aligned from 0 technique to play-side B-Gap. If you have help from the backside guard on a down lineman, combo block to the nearest linebacker. Rip through if possible.
BSG-Climb to the nearest LB. Scoop block with the center if necessary. Rip through if possible.
BST-Climb to the nearest LB. Punch through DT if necessary. Rip through if possible.
Our Gun Sweep has been our "money" play for a while now. We started running it as a way to spread the Defense to allow for larger creases when we run our Zone Blocking scheme. We were pleasantly surprised at the results and I think you will be as well. We run it as follows.
From our 1-Back Dbl-Wing set, we pull any "uncovered" Guards to play side to lead block. We execute mesh to backside and have backside wing cross QB's face right after the mesh. A good mesh is important as it will Freeze "Mike". We log playside OLB with playside wingback. Our pulling Guard/Guards wheels around that log block and look for next available (usually Safety). We hand to backside wingback as he crosses QB's face and he follows pulling Guard staying on his outside hip. Playside Z executes either "stalk" block or takes CB downfield with "fade" route
Note-- We usually Zone Block our 25's and 26's (regular handoffs to the mesh back) so when we run our Gun Sweep, we Zone that as well except for uncovered Guards which we pull. Have fun with this and tweek it to suit your personnel. Good Luck.
When you eliminate the impossible, whatever is left, however improbable, has to be the truth.
