Coach Eastons new manual on the 3 x 2 spread passing game will be available this next week through the Jerry Campbell Football Store. Coach Eastons new manual is guaranteed to be a great one, the manual includes the following:
Here are the topics covered.
Basic principles of the 3 x 2 (includes diagrams of the 3 basic aligments we work from)
Necessary personnel and what we look for in each one (centers, guards, tackles included)
QB requirements and training ( includes physical and mental traits I look for) indepth look at what it takes to play the position successfuly in the 3 x 2
Receiver's (what we look for and how we train them)
Getting the right receiver's in the 5 right spots
Cross training of all receivers to play all 5 slots, not just one (emphasized)
Explanation of route tree we use for basis of all our patterns
Lots of diagrammed plays built around the mesh-smash-flood-vertical stretch concepts that I built the offense around. Probably 20 plus diagrams all together in book, maybe a few more.
How the defense trys to stop us- what we do to influence them
Coach Easton has made it easily understood and readable, added a lot of things he has picked up over the years on his general coaching philosophy. Coaches new manual will sell for $29.95 plus shipping.
Coach Campbell has graciously rescued my efforts with the book after the fiasco with the other publisher. So, after all it will soon be ready to purchase and be put to good use by you and your staff. We hope it is in time to aid you that still have spring practice coming up. Please feel free to contact me here on this thread if you have any questions.

Thank you so much for putting this together and autographing it. I definitely will be installing the nuts and bolts of this offensive attack in the upcoming weeks.
I would also like to encourage all other coaches interested in learning more about the 3x2 Spread Offensive Attack developed over the years by such a knowledgeable and fine coach and gentlemen (and I may add - a man of God) to purchase the book as soon as Coach Campbell has made it available. Definitely need to add this book to your football library.
Thanks again, Coach, and I have the greatest respect for you through all your encouragement during my coaching endeavors and special times of spiritual need during my Mom's passing into God's Heavenly Kingdom.
Thank you so much for the kind words. So glad to hear that you feel the book is worthwhile. By all means, stay in touch and let me know how the offense is doing for you in the coming months. I continue to pray for your family every day, Mike, and can just visualize your mom dancing with your dad as you told me that was her desire to dance with him once again.

Yes, we just started practice and feel that your system will greatly improve our team's success for 2008. As of this time, we are still evaluating our overall talent and where we will have the best personnel placement.
We have a strong "Tebow-like" QB at the controls who is left-handed but can move and throws well on the run and does not panic in scrambles and has the great decision-making to put it down and run if needed. Great quick "hot" feet.
Will also incorporate Single Wing concepts in the short-yardage and goalline situations.
Again, I cannot ever fully thank you for your help and support to me both on and off the field, in my football life and my daily life spiritually.
So glad to hear the system is being well accepted. Thank you for the kind words. Keep me posted on your progress as spring practice proceeds if you will. Where do you coach again? (state and city).
What class school?

I am the Head Coach of the St. Lawrence Valley TrailBlazers. We are a semi-pro football team in upstate New York and are members of the Northeastern Football Alliance. The NFA has teams in Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Albany, Watertown, Utica, Hornell, Lockport, Johnstown (NY), Troy and Lyndonville as well as our team located in St. Lawrence County near the St. Lawrence River and Canadian border.
I'll definately update through the progress of our season.
You will appreciate the description of our 1994 AFL Super Bowl Championship play off run in my book
you just purchased. Our guys were paid and we were able to send 31 athletes on to the next rung of pro ball in the 10 years I had the team. My 1995 Punter, Scott Player, had been the starting Punter with the Arizona Cardinals right up until this past season. All of our success came from the 3 x 2.

After so many years of discussing this topic, devoting a section in my book to it that you and I have shared about reading the square, looking for checks for the various coverages in the PSL and post snap period, etc. have come to the conclusion that SOME of the basics will always remain the same. BUT, THAT IS IS MORE EFFECTIVE TO TEACH DIFFERENT WAYS OF READING FOR EACH DIFFERENT PATTERN BECAUSE IT IS NO LONGER VIABLE TO USE THE SAME METHOD FOR ALL.
Let's look at some of the basics that will always remain constant in my opinion: In todays PSL reads, we find it is not imperative that we attach as much importance to the cb's as we used to. The thing that will not change, in my opinion, is that what we really need to read on ALL pass plays is the position of the
SAFIES AND THE MIKE BACKER. For the most part, these will tell you what to expect is coming your way from the defense. A quick glance at the position of alignment on your WR's by the corners, for checks to see if they are indicating man or zone coverages is usually sufficient. Of course it goes without saying that the QB's job is to discern uon the snap if they are staying in what was indicated in the PSL, or are they stemming to something entirely different?
I always teach the QB's to locate the FS first thing out of the huddle. Then to locate the SS. These two will tellyou what coverages to expect as shown in the PSL. Here is how we teach them to read what to expect. According to our past conversations I know you teach the same thing as you have sent me articles that teach this very method.
First off, scan the formation for uncovered receivers. if you find some look for uncovered checks. If FS is is LOW, check other coverage keys for cover # 0. If FS is HIGH checkother coverage keys for cover # 1 or cover # 3. If both safties are LOW, check other keys for cover 0. If both are HIGH, check for cover #2 or cover # 2 man or quarter's coverage. If they have two safties and are in staggard alignment check keys for cover #1 ROBBER or # 3 ROBBER.
YOUR QB HAS TO BE READY FOR WELL DISGUISED LOOKS IN THE SECONDARY IN TODAYS GAME!!! If there is one safety and he rolls down hard on the snap, have a plan for the pressure that is surely coming most of the time! If they have two safties rolling down hard on the snap, get ready for the blitz and have a wellpracticed plan to beat it!!! If both safties stay high on the snap, your QB mus then be ready to go throug his progression reads and he must know where the weaknesses of the opponet lies and attack those spots or defenders.
I will continue on this afternoon with POST SNAP READ TECHNIQUES THAT WE UTILIZE. This is a great topic Bill and appreciate you getting it started!

Here are things that we have taught over the years to help determine coverages correctly that you and I have shared in the past in hope of helping young coaches and old coaches alike.
We are going to read what we call THE SQUARE, an area that is MOF about 15 yds to 25 yds deep and two yards inside the hashes. This is for when you have failed to detemine the coverage in the PSL and lets you know if you have recognized it correctly after the snap. This a drop back reading technique but works well for a gun QB as well. He just keeps his head and eyes straight down field and does not stare at either safety, but sees them out of his peripheral vision.
If neither safety shows up in the square, and both are aligned deep, it will indicate a cover #2 . quick look at the CB's will tell him if it is #2/man or #2/zone. IF NEITHER SHOW UP IN THE SQUARE AND BOTH ARE LOW, HERE COMES THE BLITZ AND YOU HAD BETTER HAVE A PLAN READY TO STOP IT.
If the SS shows in the square this indicates a cover # 3 rolled weak or cover # 1 possibly.
If the FS (weak safety) shows in the square this would indicate a cover # 3 or cover # 1. If it is cover # 3, it could be 3 sky(safety) or 3 cloud (CB) depending on who has the short zone.
Very important to teach your QB to understand that if either show, the high percentage throw then becomes the side the safety came from, in other words away from the defender. IF NEITHER SHOW, THEN THROWING INTO A MOFO(MIDDLE OF FIELD OPEN) IS ALWAYS A HIGH PERCENTAGE THROW!!!
Most know I run a 3 x 2 spread, but when throwing from a more conventional formation such as a one back with 2 TE's and 2 WR's which I know you use a lot probably, we want to do away with a pooular misconception about counting the defenders in the box. We don't actually count the defenders but just look at the safeties. One safety deep usually indicates 8 in the box, two would indicate 7. With one TE, 3 WR's and one back ( you taught me this Bill) one deep safety indicates 7 in the box and two would indicate 6 in the box. This technique is very accurate 99% of the time and much faster 100% of the time.
If you have a running play called, and the QB is looking at 3 DLM, this indicates some form of 3-4 which is nothing more than the old 5-2 with a few different angles to block and is a bit more mobile, indicates a
a a 5-3, 33 stack, 3-5 stack. Eliminate the 3-3 stack if they do not use it it often! you can TOTALLY DISREGARD THE 5-3 UNLESS THERE IS A STACK ON THE NOSE REGULARLY!
If they have 4 DLM it is a 4-3 0r possibly 4-4 (4-2-5) . Remember, a 4-3 under/shade is almost exactly the same as 3-4 (5-2) with the nose shaded strong and kicked down, or eagled, reduced on the backside.
It then becomes a 5-2 eagle weak. WHAT YOU REALLY NEED TO KNOW IS HOW MANY SAFTIES AND IF THEY ARE IN RED OR WHITE. WHITE= LB DEFENDING THE B GAP RED= B GAP DEFENDED BY A 3 TECH OR A 4i.
Next post I will share what I mean about a more effective way for your QB to read in todays game, the coverages he will be seeing. Feel free to jump right in with coments Bill, and anyone else interested in doing so.

First off on this segment, let's talk about tagged routes. Let's say that from my 3 x 2 formation (diagrammed here to make sure we are all on the same page:)
WE ARE GOING TO TAG THE C RECEIVER WHO WILL RUN A 10 YD DRAG TO THE CLEARED OUT ZONE OF THE DEFENSE.
.........................................................FS....................................................................................
................................................................................................SS............................................
C.................WB.................................MB......................SB..........................C.............................
...............................................5....2......2....5
Y..............................................T..G..C..G..T............................................X...................................
................................................C...................................B...........A................................................
.......................................................QB..........................................................................................
X= RUNS A BOUNDARY RELEASE GO (ACOUNTS FOR CB)
A= RUNS STRAIGHT GO (ACCOUNTS FOR SS )
B= RUNS 18 YD POST BY FIRST STEM TO SAM BACKER TO GET HIM IN REVERT MODE, SECOND STEM TO POST TO INFLUENCE FS
C= PRIMARY RECEIVER AND TAGGED ROUTE RUNS DRAG AFTER CHECK RELEASING INTO PATTERN AT 10 YDS DEPTH AND IN ZONE CLEARED OUT BY TRIPS SIDE RECEIVERS.
WE TEACH THE QB'S TO ALWAYS STAY WITH THE TRIPS SIDE OR TAGGED ROUTE AS LONG AS IS POSSIBLE, AND TO GET THE TAG THE BALL THE INSTANT HE IS OPEN! THUS, WE HAVE REDUCED THE READING OF THE FIELD TO 1/3 AS I TEACH WE READ ONLY THE DEFENDER IN ZONE AND ONLY THE RECEIVER IN MAN. IF THE TAG IS NOT THERE, THEN WE TEACH THE QB TO GO THROUGH HIS READ PROGRESSION (HE ALWAYS HAS ONE BE IT MAN OR ZONE) WHICH WILL LEAD HIM TO THE OPEN MAN.
BASIC RULES= READ FROM TOP TO BOTTOM INSIDE OUT OR OUTSIDE IN DEPENDING UPON THE PATTERN. BUT, JUST A PEAK UP TOP TO MAKE SURE THE RECEIVER IS NOT WIDE OPEN IS SUFFICIENT IN A TAGGED ROUTE, IF THE ROUTE IS AN UNDERNEATH ONE BY THE TAG.
HERE IS ANOTHER SCENARIO: YOU REALLY NEED A FIRST DOWN! YOU CALL FOR THE TE TO RUN A 5 YD OUT CUT. IT IS A 3 STEP DROP PASS AND FIRE ON RHYTHM, WHY BOTHER LOOKING UP TOP? WE DON'T STARE AT THE PRIMARY, BUT WE DON'T WASTE TIME WITH UNNECESARY HEAD MOVEMENT EITHER. ONE-TWO-THREE- THROW IT! POINT OF INTEREST: WE ALWAYS TRY TO THROW OUTCUTS TO THE LEFT AS THE SPIN FACTORS OF THE FOOTBALL ARE CONDUCIVE TO DOING SO.
EACH PATTERN HAS IT'S OWN IDIOSYNCRISIES AND I FEEL WE SHOULD TEACH OUR READING BASED ON THOSE PARTICULAR SET OF CIRCUMSTANCES, AND NOT A SET OF PRECONCEIVED RULES. JUST MY WAY.

In your point of interest you wrote that "we always try to throw out cuts to the left as the spin factors of the football are conductive to doing so."
Is that for right and left handed quarterbacks/passers? Or, is it for a right-handed quarterback throwing to the left? Then for a left-handed quarterback the spin factors of the football would be more conductive to the right on the out cut throws, correct?
Your summation is exactly right. Bill Walsh and Bart Starr have books out for years now that deal exclusively with SPIN FACTORS. Spin factors are not some theory, they are proven facts, and to understand them is to have a decided edge in coaching QB's. Thakns for the question.
