Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
I understand the technique - drop whip & pivot. Whip the playside arm back rapidly - but I can't visualize "slapping the dog"
Pivot your up foot while taking a short directional step with your right foot. When do I "punch the chicken"? Why a chicken?
I believe the whole punch the chicken piece is just a way to get the kids thinking about keeping low and ripping thier backside arm past the downblock--keeping their center of gravity down and striking from a low angle. But in the end, I totally agree with coach--no matter how you "say" it, it is still a pull.

There is nothing that will show a man's true character like the 2 yard line.
Animal references aside... I think the main point behind those terms is simply to teach the puller to throw his hand through a point below the knee, rather than throwing the elbow, in order to help the player maintain a lower pad level when bringing his hips and shoulders around, since the natural reaction is to rise when throwing an elbow.
I don't think Coach Campbell has anything against chickens and dogs! They just happen to be low to the ground! If you want to use the phrase, couldn't you just replace them with the name of a rival school and/or their mascot? That is, unless your main rival is a grizzly or a gorilla!
