Coaches,
On defense I have only one defensive signal and that is for the base defense alone. So far I've just been calling out the blitzes (example - "Razor Right" - RILB Blitz). I realize I cant keep shouting this from the sideline because I'm televising it.
My question is, at this level, is it too much info to have a bunch of defensive signals? If not, what is a good method to follow? Any help with this will be greatly appreciated.
Although I utilize wrist coaches with my kids on defense, I'm sure your kids could handle a few signals coach and would probably pick them up very quickly since that's "like the big guys do it"! You could also use solid colored cards as well to indicate your calls (red, right side blitz... blue, left side, etc.).
Good luck and have fun coach!

Thanks coach! I went with a few hand signals and, you are absolutely right, my WLB picked it right up! Its workin' out fine!
Make up a hand signal to signify each backer and have each backer put their hand on their hip with their index finger pointing in the general direction of the QB. Give the sign of the Linebacker. I use it all the time for Youth Ball, never met a coach who figured out WTH was going on how my backers would Blitz without any obvious signal and do it so coordinated. If you want to get technical you could make up another set of signs to say where you want to blitz. Inside, or Outside. The signs to signify each backer should be something natural, like if you where a Cap take the cap off and wipe forehead (many ppl do this frequently enough to not seem obvious) or put your clipboard to your hip if you carry one.

Exactly what Bill said. Nothing complicated necessary. Remember you're not playing against a Joe Gibbs or a Bill Bellichek or any of those greats (well maybe you are if they're retired and coaching their grandkids but u know what i mean) so you don't need a guy giving signs like he's the Third Base coach. A simple sign that acknowledges the player and a "go" sign.

That's exactly right! Do not give your opponent too much credit. 8-9 year olds have enough trouble getting in & out of a hudddle (& lined up properly) to be sophisticated!
They do at that. *Thinks back to his 7-8, and 9 year old playing days* I recall a team we did a QB Keeper to the Right side and I was the pull-player as the Center (Kevin Mawae style!) and for some reason I outpaced our QB and literally ran up his legs trying to get out front to block and made him fall down... I've noticed I am a slower sprinter but I get what they thought Jerry Rice had, "game speed" I think they called it. Yes and that wasn't the first time I've done it and with a faster QB too... Embarassing /sigh
