Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
hey, just curious how you would run the 4-4 stack against the spread. for this scenario I am defining spread as pretty much 2 WRs on each side and a back.(Ace Gun formation).
Ive drawn alot of stuff up but just wanted to see if anyone with some 44 experience had something I may have missed, or maybe you have faced a team that has shown some holes in that d.
Do they want to run or pass more from the formaton. If you are talking youth football I would think it is more run than pass. Are you playing 3 deep zone or man. My opinion is you are better off in 3 deep zone vs. run and man to man vs. pass. If you were playing both you can easily disguise zone and man.
Inside Backers - Read Guards to 1 Back or in Youth Football read 1 Back. Bump motion to trips.
Outside Backers - Read Tackle for Run Pass. Vs. Run Contain, Vs. Pass Turn and sprint straight back and play vertical from #2 1st, If #2 goes flat, play curl, if #2 drags, settle
If #2 takes tight split from tackle(3 or less yards), walk up on LOS on outside shoulder of #2 and take him on at the snap keeping outside arm free and play contain, if pass jam him at LOS and then run deep.
If #2 motions away slide in at 1 wide and 3 deep from tackle and cross key the opposite #2. If motion to your side walk up on LOS and take on #2(Jet Motion-Sweep) if motion continues wide then widen with motion man.
FS - Read Guards for run/pass. If run, once ball is handed or tossed, go, get to ball on inside out angle. If Pass range in deep middle 1/3rd and play 2 verts from #2's 1st. Stay deeper than the deepest and realize you have help from the outside backer.
Corners - Deep 1/3rd, play deeper than the deepest.
In Zone vs. Pass all perimiter players are keeping eyes on QB and break on ball when thrown.
These are general responsibilities. Exactly how you would play it would depend on what they are trying to do with this formation. If you were to play man Corners on #1, Outside Backers on #2, Inside Backers 1 Back out to their side. FS plays the same as in Zone.
Against a 2x2 (as shown in Coach Williams' diagram) or 3x1, we will press align against the receiver on the LOS. This allows us to be more effective at discouraging and/or defending against slip/tunnel or bubble screens which are common out of these formations. We also try to coach up our inverts (OLB) to make contact with the slot receivers in an attempt to reroute them or delay them on vertical routes. We play a lot of cover 3 and quite a bit of cover 1 coverage wise. We will play some 2 deep man-under (cover 5 for us) when facing offenses that throw the ball particularly well.
