Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
I am beginning to do some initial game planning for the upcoming season. One of our opponents runs a 2te set with one back from shotgun. Traditionally, they have a stong runner at both positions. They like to run the zone read. Is the defensive set described below fundamentally sound? What other alignments are good as a change up. We are a 4-4 G front base team, and also run a 5-3 double eagle and tuff/bear look off the double eagle.
the coverage will be cover one
backside whip linebacker in a 9 and defensive end brought down to a 4i
weak defensive tackle in a weak shade in backside a gap
strong defensive tackle in a 3 and strong defensive end in 9
remaining 3 linebackers are in a 50, 10, and 70 from weak to strong side
Again, please tell me what adjustments you would make and why.
I like what you have. The bear or double eagle are good options too. It is good to have a 3 tech (or 4i) to the side that the RB is offset so, if it is a give and the RB bends it back, he has to bend all the way behind the backside B gap DL. If your 9 techs force the give, you should be in good shape.
I would be a bit concerned about speed option strong, it seems like you may need help from the FS. What is your plan there?

I'm a fan of covering the Tackles rather than shading them--keep that downblock from happening, plus you allow yourself some good stunt possibilities in B and C gap--if nothing else, it is a good wrinkle. Zone is all about not over-doing it on the DL and stringing things along. How is this team with dealing with good pressure? Is blitzing off the edge at the meshpoint an option?

There is nothing that will show a man's true character like the 2 yard line.

Thank all of you for being considerate enough to offer such helpful suggestions. I am recording all of this information in my scouting folder. The offensive line is probably, and has tradtionally, been one of the best in our new district. I am a believer in twists, and will use them once I determine which way the center is protecting.
Speed option was brought up by another coach in a short conversation last night. I am depending heavily, probably too heavily, on the the speed of our free safety, end, and linebacker. However, this is the one area where we have a decided advantage over this particular opponent.
