when in man coverage, i have my dog/spur blitz the edge automatically if the #2 threat is in the backfield. Vs a pro i that would be my weakside dog/spur... i teach him to blitz to the deepest back. This is a contain blitz. Im wondering what u guys think???
We play man free (cover 1) behind our 6 man pressure and man (cover 0) behind our 7 and 8 man pressure. In doing so, the edge blitzers usually play a "peel" technique similar to what you described. I think it is sound football to send them if the back they are responsible for in coverage stays in to block, as long as you have a way to pick him up if he releases.
Glad to have you here on the forum coach. Looking forward to talking some football with you!

I can see it being a bit of an issue vs a double tight. You bring that defender one man further out for a kick-out on a power or blast play. Other than that, if you have the athlete that can read that back crossing his face and can run with him, I think you're ok.

There is nothing that will show a man's true character like the 2 yard line.
When facing a dbl tight formation, our spur/bandit to the closed side will "load" automatically into a 9 on the LOS. Often times we will actually make a TIGHT call from the sideline to load the tightside invert as well so we're basically playing a 5-3 at that point.
We will also frequently check to our BEAR front when facing a team that runs a lot of their offense with 2 TEs.
