In the area that i coach in, the teams all have a chance to go to disney and play for the pop warner national championship. I have seen clips of some of the teams online and I know that the best teams are the ones that have highschool freshmen on them. Thats the age group i coach anyhow. I have had freshmen on my team that werent very good at all, but you know what i mean... These teams are huge and they can play.
What im getting at is that last year a team from my league had the privilage of going down to florida for a chance to compete with the best. Many of the teams that make it that far, trim the fat off of the roster and only bring the good players. Im talking about 5th and 6th graders getting left behind.
Could any of you guys do that to a kid? I couldnt... Imagine seeing little Bobby in the supermarket 10 years later? Id feel lower than whale dung, knowing that i stole one the best childhood experiences he may have ever had. Sometimes my own competitive nature and ego gets in the way, and fogs the big picture... But I would never stoop that low. Id blow athe bull behind the barn before i ever did something like that.
Quite frankly I think thats a Chicken Sh*t maneuver. It just goes to show you how shallow some folks are. Trophies are great and all but, to my mind, the experience is what its all about. I'm a bit of a gray beard, the need to stroke my own ego with Trophies and Winning percentage has long since passed.
My trophy is seeing the kids grow up and be hard working, decent human beings. When some young man comes up to you 5 or 10 years after and says hi "Coach", you know you've done a decent job.
Its not about how much YOU know about the game, its about how much you share that knowledge with the people around you.
