Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
I just finished watching the new Jim McNalley dvds and he talks about "lateral footwork" for Guards, Centers and tackles to use when running zone. We currently use a drop step when an uncovered lineman is working in combo with his adjacent covered lineman. Also he demonstrates lateral footwork when using a cutoff block on the backside of the zone play . I noticed in cutups that the Longhorns used this technique. I am trying to decide whether or not to give it a try at the high school level. Do you know of any high school coaches that have used this technique or where I can get more info?
I know Jim McNally, & his theories (they are good)!
The main thing on the first step is to "unlock" your hips to the target, & that step AND angle to A.P. depends on the horizontal align of the DLM & is more important than the actual step. Imperative to get your eyes to the A.P. with speed!
The lateral footwork has the athlete close the gap between him and the defender by taking 2 lateral steps one with the right and one with the left (keeping the hips closed and the shoulders parallel to the LOS, then on the third step opening the hips with a drop step). After that everything is the same.

Coach I'm with Coach Oneback I follow Jim McNallys techniques. I teach an "L" step and have been doing so for some time with the inside running game. The first step is lateral and the second step is up field creating a "L" step. I learned a term from Les Steckles and he said it best. The first step ties and the second step wins so, I teach a "L" step. When working a combo with your partner and you create to lateral steps using a near ear rule for helmet placement it will close the door to the down defender and closes off upfield penetration. Coach Campbell
from what i understand Coach McNalley is advocating lateral footwork whenever an uncovered line is working towards a defender that is either head up or in an outside shade on his adjacent covered teammate, regardless of whether or not the play is and inside or outside zone. I have watched your tape on the L step. The lateral steps i am writing about are differenct. For example an uncovered right guard working with his tackle vs a 5 technique defender would first take a lateral step with his right foot, then a corresponding lateral step with his left foot, then a drop step with his right foot. The guards hips and shoulders are parallel to the LOS until he takes the angle bucket or drop step. My concern is whether the guard make contact prior to his drop step and lacks power because of a parallel stance.

Thanks for your offer. I am looking forward to talking to you. We leave for camp on monday and I am trying to finalize a cohesive system for our high school lineman on running inside and outside zone. It want to keep things as simple as possible.
