Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
We went all season with guards weighing roughly 165-175lbs. We tried everything to help them throughout the year but consistently they wore down in the second half. In our division the 3 and 1 techniques were 260-330lbs. My plan is to try to get bigger at these positions next year but if i am stuck with the same smaller guards what can i do to give them an advantage??
We have always put our faster guys at guard until this year, we ended up putting our quick guys at tackle and our biggest guys at guard and really had more success with it. I felt like we were most likely to get a big kid in a 3 tech or tighter and a smaller faster kid at end, if we needed to block a 3 tech with someone other than the guard our tackle had good angles for a downblock and we had bigger kids to help the center vs an odd front. Whenever we comboed G and T we had the faster guy getting up to the LB and the big kid staying big on big. The only time it backfired was against a 3-3 team that played the tackles head up on our tackle, but we were so outmatched it wouldn't have mattered what we did.
A few years ago the Virginia State Champions switched the Guards & Tackles on a WEEKLY basis. We COULD do this easily in our zone blocking system, because everyone is zone blocking (all linemen learn the same rules & techniques, so you can interchange anyone at anytime).
I would see what PERCENTAGE of the teams covered my Guards. If it was OVER 50% - I would have the bigger kids at Guard.
that suggestion seems so obvious/simple but i can honestly say that i have never thought of doing that. It makes a lot of sense too. We went against huge 3 and 1 techs all year and just could not handle it. In most cases it would npot have mattered but in some games it would have helped. This is why i enjoy this forum.
Is this primarily for a zone blocking scheme, or have you found this effective when you have had your larger guys pulling as well? My concern is that our HB is a speedy 4.3 40 kid and the last thing I want to see is him waiting in the backfield every play (back side leakage has been a HUGE problem in the past).
Being large doesn't mean a Guard can't pull. Being SLOW means he can't pull. If you HAVE to - you can run COUNTERS with the TACKLES pulling ("DART" PLAY).
I totally agree with coach regarding the interchanging of the guards and tackles depending on the front you are facing. Being a veer team we like to have quick tackles and put our big on big. We can still short trap with the guards and tackle trap with our quicker people. We determine which ones can handle the traps better and use them, like coach said quickness determines who traps. We flip flop our line so it makes it easier to pull only the players we want to use.
