Installing The Snap Count
The following instructions for installing the snap count will follow the same procedures as for all our plays, formations and shifts. It must be noted that the quarterback must vary the snap count, this means change up the count so the defense can't get into a feel for when the ball is going to be snapped, this slows the defensive charge down.
Snap Count: If the ball is not going to be snapped on first sound the quarterback will always use the command " Go " to start the cadence. Thus, our offense must get to the L.O.S. after breaking from the huddle and get set. Start the cadence with "Go" because most linemen are conditioned to move on "Go". Quarterback when using the Go alert must vocally sound as if the ball is going to be snapped (be an acter).
On " Sound " All linemen, backs and receivers will get to their designated position and get ready in their proper stance. The ball will be snapped on " Go ".
On " Color " Any verbal color alert from the quarterback and the center will snap the ball.
On " One " Ball will be snapped on the first hut called.
On " Two " Ball will be snapped on the second Hit. Rhythmic snap count should be used. Example of going on two - Hut, Hut.
On " Three " Ball will be snapped on the third Hut — "Hut, Hut, Hut.
When going on three you would want to use a non — rhythmic count.
On "Freeze" Quarterback will try and draw defense offsides. Offense should not move until either the defense jumps off-sides or the quarterback sees that the "Freeze Snap" isn't going to work so he then audibles to a play. Best used in 3rd and 4th down situations when less than 5 yards is needed.
On " Ice " Used when trying to run the clock out at the end of the half or at the end of the game. The offense when going on "Ice" should not move, QB is trying to run additional time off the clock.
Play Calling Procedure In The Huddle: Example
The following procedures for calling plays in the huddle should be followed as
Discussed below:
1. Formation Right — quarterback gives the formation, which in most cases includes the backfield set.
2. Play 18 Load — quarterback then gives the play to be run.
3. Snap Count The snap count follows the play called.
4. Ready After the quarterback repeats the formation, play, and snap count twice he then says "Ready".
5. Break The offensive unit as a group will say "Break after quarterback gives the command "Ready". Once the offensive unit breaks the huddle, they all sprint to the L.O.S. and they get ready to play.
Example: ball snapped on two. — Play Called: Right 18 Load on two.
1. After play has been called in the huddle the offense should turn and get to the line of scrimmage as quickly as possible. When the quarterback goes underneath his center or from the gun he should begin the cadence by saying: Go, Blue 30, Blue 30, Hut, Hut. Ball is snapped on second hut.
2. An important coaching point is to remind your quarterback that if a play is not going to be audiblized on the line of scrimmage and the play is called in the huddle the quarterback should use a dummy option number as to confuse the defense.
Pairing Plays or Using Option — On — Me at the L.O.S.
1. Whenever we pair plays or use Option — On — Me the ball should be snapped on one or higher. The ball cannot be snapped on first sound.
As you install the offense you must condition your players to go on different snap counts. Don't get them into going on the same snap count all the time mix it up.
