Coach Campbell, I have your book Installing the Under Center, Gun, and Pistol Offense and I also listened in on your Glazier Webinar last week. The webinar was very helpful to add to the base of info I got from the book. It took things to the next level. I have been going through every defensive alignment I can imagine so I can come up with solutions to potential problems before we get in-season. One defense that I have concerns about is a 4-3 with a combo coverage. None of our opponents currently runs this but we used to run it. DL aligns in 3 and 6 tech's on the TE side and 1 and 5 on the split side. Mike aligns in the strong A gap, Sam is head up on the strong tackle, and Will is aligned on the inside shoulder of the weak tackle. Corners are 6 yards off and on the outside shoulder of the #1 receiver. The 2 safeties line up 8 yards off the LOS just outside where a TE would align. The corner and safety work together on pass coverage. If the #1 receiver goes in, the C releases him to the safety. If #2 releases out then the S stays in and lets the C pick him up. If the receivers go vertical the C and S cover them man to man.
The alignment and the Option on Me rules would tell the QB to run inside veer to the SE side. My opinion would be that a Safety 8 yards off would not be considered an invert. The rule is also that you can't count on the weakside tackle blocking the Will. It is not really a defensive triangle but it almost is. I think that weak side safety will get involved in the run game too quickly and will put the option in a 3 on 3 situation. I have one theory on how to handle this defense without changing the Option on Me rules but I want to know what your plan would be.
