Nice... How much did you guys typically throw the ball that year Doug? What was the play-action off of as their corner apparently bit pretty hard on it?

Double moves might give us the ability to get the ball down the field on occasion. Would love to open things up a little more this year if I'm lucky enough to find (or develop) a few receivers that can catch the ball! We will have bookend tight ends next season that are both about 5' 10" - one has arguably the best hands on the team, the other... not so much!

That was 2009 - we averaged about 14 throws per game (out of about 38 offensive plays per game, if I recall correctly). This was actually the very first play of the game. We had already played this team earlier in the year (plus we knew they had been scouting us), so we knew that they rotated their Safety towards motion when we motioned to trips as we did here. Also, we generally only threw short in the first quarter all year, so we expected them to bite on the hitch fake, which they did. The biggest key to double move plays like this is getting protection - as you can see on the video we barely got the pass off. This could easily have been a sack.

We use full slide with the RB picking up the edge rusher on the side away from the direction in which we are sliding. Any middle blitzes (anything between the slide-side G and the T on the other side) should get picked up by the slide - since we are moving as a unit and everyone's got an area, not a man, it's pretty tough for blitzers to get through there. The QB then is responsible for any blitz coming off the edge and needs to know where to go with the ball if he gets that.

Of course, any double move type play is going to be very difficult to protect, as you saw on the video - if our QB hadn't made a nice adjustment by moving in the pocket, that play would have been a sack instead of a TD. If you want to try something like that, it would probably be a good idea to keep an extra blocker in (either a TE, RB or motion over a WR) to give the protection a better chance.
