I was watching the video highlights from the 1991 Redksins season on Hulu.com and there is a play that Joe Gibbs ran against the New York Giants called Gut Seal. It is interesting because it seems similar to the Wham play that they used to run EXCEPT the HB(Warren) pulls and traps the EMOLOS to the weakside while everyone up front blocks zone. It seems like it would be a great change up play because you get those linebackers flowing to the strongside and the running back cuts it back weak and inside of Warren's block. Has anyone ever run this? They were running it out of a 3 tight end set but I figure you could run it out of a 1 tight 3 wide set as well.
I ran Joe Gibbs' complete offense, going back to 1981.
"Gut-Seal" was a big play for us. You block it just like the regular "Gut" (Inside Zone) except you bring the "H" back all the way across to kick out the EMLOS, and it is more or less a "pre-determined" cutback for "R". Can be run from several formations & personnel groupings, but they PREFERRED it from "Trips":
Could you run Gut Seal from a 3 wide one back set? Block zone toward the HB side and have the HB pull and trap the 5 tech outside the weak OT?
he traps the EMLOS so if the 5 is the end men then yes if there is a 9 tech like in a 50 then no he would trap the 9 tech. Gut seal has been a great play for us and we actually prefer it over the counter gap.
