Hello coaches.
Ok, I was thinking about something and I know it has already been tried but I was looking at the Desert Swarm form of the 46 and thought about something. What if you put the NT in a cocked angle on the center and had him attack the strongside or wideside of the field on the center in the a-gap and penetrate. Basically take a MLB type of kid and put him in that position because he is quick and can knock the center back into the other a-gap and then penetrate. You still have your two 3 techs penetrating. Then you have two outside linebacker types attacking from the outside. Either a 5 tech weak or in a wide 9 strong. I would think that would force an offense to block 5 with 6. You then have a FS over the top who can come down tight in a robber type situation if it is an option team or stay deep against passing teams. Man to man everywhere else. I don't see how 5 offensive lineman could block 5 pass rushers in that situation. You would almost have to have slide protection with a TE protecting against the other pass rusher on the outside. That leaves my 6 in coverage against your 4 receivers. I like those odds.
I think the old 46 where they would go 0 coverage and have the FS take the TE was a weakness in the scheme because there was too much space for the TE to get a quick pass and then break one loose.
Any thoughts on that? I have been told by a veteran coach whom I trust very much(Bill Mountjoy) that he used only three coverages in his defense. Those were cover 1 free, cover one robber and sometimes 0. To me, if you want to do that, why not play the nose in a 1 tech and have him unleash on the center and wreak havoc in the backfield. It would almost force the offense to double him. Even if you went 5 wides, I don't see how you could block my 5 with your 5 plus I have a free safety over the top.
