Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
We are switching next year to shotgun spread. It seems the biggest question we must answer is what our run game will look like. We are deciding now between zone read or veer. My question is, are people running both or is it best to choose one and get really good at it. Obviously compliments will be sprinkled in with each.
Also- what is the best resource (book or DVD) for installing a gun zone read run game?
Coach have been running this type of offense now for some time each compliments the other. Veer gives you a front side read and the zone read will give you a backside read. Both are easy for the QB since both are reading in escence the same thing and that is the end man or 5 technique on the L.O.S. Look forward to talking more on this subject. Coach CAmpbell
I personally prefer the veer to the zone. My reasoning behind this is because it allows my back to get North/South much quicker and it allows him to make his cut much quicker also. IMO, it is also easier to teach an offensive line veer concepts as opposed to zone concepts. If you install the veer correctly (i.e. triple gun from Tony DeMeo), then you won't necessarily need a zone compliment because your dive back will have a frontside and backside cut that he can execute on the same play, so it can attack both sides of the center. I run a version of DeMeo's triple gun at my middle school, and I also have been tweaking a high school version of my offense for when I move up to the next level. Once again, this is all my personal preference, there are lots of other coaches that prefer the zone for their own reasons also.

thats a good point coach C..looked back on some of our cutback highlights and we were often running to a 3 tech on the play..BUT like Demeo, we had very similar success in terms of yds per rush vs a 1 or 3..OUT OF THE GUN THAT IS..i think that is important Love these two, veer and zone triple, as complimentary plays..Similar read and mesh(but not exactly the same)..minimal extra teaching...and in Veer we are coming AT the DE "vertically" and in Zone read we are GOING AWAY from the DE "horizontally"..surprising how much they look alike to other teams from the press box even though they two different plays with two very different attack points and philosphies
Demeo says Gun triple is more of an "all in one" play with the cutbacks etc whereas Zone read seems to have more complimentary plays off it(zone pitch/zone bubble/PA screens/quad option/percy Harvin counter)....too bad Denver didn't have any of these "answer plays" ready when Bellichek out coached him..Demeo also feels that in Gun triple the FB can become a useful second level blocker vs Zone Read where he is not...
one thing i would say is that you have to add a pitch or bubble or a third option to Zone read to make a valid comparison between these plays cause too easy for teams to shuffle step a stud DE like New England did
