Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
I'm coach for a 12-14 year old team, and were going against our first veer offense this week. Our base is a 5-3-3, but we also have a 6-2-3 and a 4-3-4 installed. Wanted to see how you guys typically align vs this type of offense. They run it with both 1 and 2 wingbacks.
I ASSUME they are predominately an OPTION team. Since I do not know exactly WHAT options they feature, how they block them, & who their biggest threats are, here are some GENERAL ideas (if you wish to PHONE me - I might be able to help; cannot type an entire defense on this site): 804-378-0116 between 11 AM & 7 PM/EASTERN. It is very difficult to suggest anything without my having watched them on film:
IDEAS DEFENDING THE OPTION
1. Make things happen quick for the QB — make offense speed up everything they do.
2. Create guessing game so put pressure back on offense.
3. Hits on QB — FB will be key to you winning. ATTACK (create TURNOVERS) — tackle the Fullback LOW (hit him EVERYTIME).
4. Movement before snap (example: F/S & both ILBers on motion in "Hawk").
5. Vary techniques more so than assignments.
6. LESS IS BETTER!
7. Secondary (hungry to be involved in the run).
8. Pre-Season take 4-5 day section to work on the option.
9. Practice Specifics — Half Line (?without ball?)
10. Monday — work on option 15 minutes regardless who you play.
11. Run down QB from backside — hit him low from behind.
12. If you are going to read, they are going to read (make all reads post-snap not pre-snap).
They do run some option, but from what I'm told they're pretty basic. A lot of jet sweeps and pre snap motion of the wingbacks. They seem to be a two hitter team. Outside with the wing, and down the middle with the fullback.
If outside veer is my #1 play, I don't want to see my tackles covered. If I run inside veer, I don't like to see 3 techniques. At any rate, that 5-3 look is a pain for veer teams unless they can throw the ball to loosen the OLB's off.

There is nothing that will show a man's true character like the 2 yard line.
Vs the 5.3.3 the best situation for running inside veer versus this scheme is to split your tight end 6 yards to break the triangle created and the veer becomes very effective. Coach Campbell

When flexing the tight end you can run vs the 3;5;3 the inside veer, Wall Veer, and Bump Veer very effective when you have the ability to run all 3 different veer schemes.

Bump is an alert for the QB to read the playside linebacker instead of the 5 tech.. The offensive tackle now slams the 5 tech. so he can't take the dive especially when the LBer is scrapping to QB. Coach campbell
