I've been working with a friend of mines son. He is a runningback naturally, he stands about 5'5, maybe 135 and was always dominant growing up but now he's kind of slow and only gets about 5.8 on his 40. I noticed his acceleration is bad and I've been doing 10 yard sprints to help that. How can I improve this kids speed?

Work on his explosiveness. Box jumps, broad jumps, change of direction drills, plyometrics, etc. Get the kid moving in many directions. Can he jump rope? If he can't coordinate his body to jump rope, he will have a tough time coordinating himself enough to change his speed appreciably. Also, work his form. I have had athletes who have all the explosion in the world, but their overall speed suffers because their running form is horrendous. There are all kinds of speed programs out there that you can get him on (including on this website). The point is to get him moving and working with the focus on speed.

There is nothing that will show a man's true character like the 2 yard line.
