We use a multiple 4-3 defensive philosophy within our program . We want to be great against the run and be very sound versus the pass. We play multiple coverages and give multiple looks up front. We want to stress lining up correctly and playing with great technique. We want to have a sound scheme that can deal with the offenses that we play during the year. For our program, the 4-3 defense allows us to maximize the personal we develop within it. We will play with 1 and 3 technique up front. Our ends are usually converted linebacker type guys. We will stand our ends up in our odd front and play games with them in our under front. Our odd front seems to be the best for us when playing spread teams. We emphasize pursuit and team tackling within our defense. We will always have some type of pursuit drill. Early in the season we will use landmarks with players running down the sideline, those on defense have to tag off on the runner. They will all have to do one up-down. We usually place a cone to give them a landmark early in the season. This is great to get them running, but also to teach good angles. We want our defense to be fast and have the desire to get to the football. We always have a "team circuit" within our practice. This period could be a turnover, or tackling. We will usually have 4 rotating stations with a different task at each one. Our circuits will vary in tempo depending on the time of season. This has been very helpful in helping our overall tackling and creating turnovers for our team.
