With our entire kicking game, we attempt to use tactics and techniques that mirror our techniques offensively and defensively. By doing so, our players have the skills necessary to carry out their assignments with confidence. It also allows us to get the most out of limited time afforded in practice. In addition, the same coaches that teach those techniques will do the same here. We make minor adjustments from game to game, wanting to get really familiar with our base schemes. Our coordinators run or delegate each side of the ball.
We divide our specials into offense and defense, with offense responsible for kickoff return and x-point/fg. Defense handles punt, punt return, fg block and kickoff duties.
Kickoff return requires the most time of any of our specials because we use a few different techniques and scheme learning. Two ten minute periods are used on Tuesday and Wednesday. We put TE/FB/LB's up front and level two to run/yet have physical attributes. RB's and WR's make up the back to catch and run. This time is an extra conditioning for kick cover scouting on Wednesday.
Extra point and FG are fairly typical big guys(OL) up front with TE/FB type upbacks.
With punt, we use the old pro formation, with the two upbacks next to the center. We like using it because we don't need to use our center in protection. We also do not need full protection in our scheme as we stop the rush momentum and go. Linebackers dominate our inside upbacks, guards and tackles. Our coverage techniques are identical to techniques of LB's covering a short pass, so our guys get good at it with all the practice we put into our pass coverage. For this reason, we can dominate our protection time in the protection phase. We will use our inverts or safeties as TE's for contain purposes. Our protector is usually a QB converted to safety to give a fake threat. Our defensive staff will coach this like a defensive play.
The same is for kickoff coverage, we utilize LB's and Safeties in the same way as above. We cross over practice in covering for our Kickoff return team for extra practice. Our coverage rules are again very similar and our personnel reflects our skills and tasks according to their regular positions. Something we spend time doing is timing up the kicker to the team takeoff so that we are full speed as close to the line of scrimmage as possible at the time of the kick.
With punt return, we make simple substitutions, return man for Mike backer(or backer), and two DE's for our DT's for running purposes. So essentially, our defensive unit remains on the field. Mass substitution is a mess. We will spend a ten minute segment early in the week to line up to our opponent and then use it as our defensive conditioning on Wednesday at the end of practice. We will run rapid fire returns in three units on after another with our left and right returns. We get a bunch of reps here with our players getting a feel finding the ball for our wall and our spacing.
Extra point and fg block use the same alignments as punt return/block, w/ Mike back in the picture. It helps us to get locked on to our assignments with familiar alignments.
Our setup for specials has worked very well for us. The coaches coach and the players play their standard techniques, affording us time management and confidence in our execution. We can use young players that merit the opportunity while at the same time letting the best man play at each position.
