Leadership, goals, and philosophies is something that is very important if you want to run a quality program in any sport. Organization is the first thing that needs to be established and that comes from the head coach and then trickles down the pyramid. My personal belief is to have elect a leadership comity that has at least one person from every position. That comity would meet every week and discuss anything that needs to be talked about, whether its concerns or questions about anything that has to do with the program to a specific player. I like the comity more than captains because it allows more than 2-4 players in on leadership roles, where as the comity will have one player from each position on it. This community allows players to voice their concerns or questions in a safe way and wont feel like they'll be singled out or punished. Leadership starts with the head coach though and then the coaching staff. A coach must act like he wants his players to act. If the coach throws a fit on bad calls consistently, then most likely the players will act just like the coach.
When it comes to the team goals and philosophies, I think that the team should create those two main pieces. I truly believe if the team can come up with what type of team they want to be and what their goals are then they will try their best to try and meet those more than if they were just following what the coaching staff made up for the team. Whether the team or coaches make up the goals or philosophies, it's up to the players to make sure they do everything in their power to make those goals happen. You have to show it or prove it, not just write it on paper or saying what you're going to do.
