The expectations I would have for an assistant coach would be improve the athletes that they coach both on and off the field using the D.R.I.L.L. Squad philosophy (Discipline Responsibility Intensity Leadership Loyalty). On the field I expect that the coaches arrive at least 15 minutes early to every practice. I also expect them to be the last ones off the field. I expect the coaches to handle themselves professionally at all times which means: no profanities, no use of tobacco, and apparel will be team issued gear. I expect them to be organized and know what they are teaching; know the proper technique and be able to explain why they utilize that drill. I expect that the coaches will work with each kid, not just work with the more talented ones or to play favorites. I expect the coach to strive to make his unit the hardest working unit on the field; develop a winning attitude. I expect them never to bicker or argue with me or any other coach; they do not always need to agree with each other but we will present a unified coaching staff on the field. If you do have an issue address it off the field in private or in a staff meeting. I expect the coaches to hustle from drill to drill; lead by example. Finally I expect the coaches to coach players up, do not bring/tear them down. If a coach has a discipline issue with a player they will ask the player to leave practice and wait in the team room until practice is over; a coach will not waste his time in practice arguing with a player. After practice is over they will talk with the player and the head coach to discuss what led to the player being kicked out of practice.
Off the field I expect the coaches to put in nine hours a day, practice and individual meetings are included in this time. In-season coaches will work from 5:30 A.M. until 2:30 P.M. During the off-season coaches can come into work anytime between 5:30 A.M. and 9:00 A.M. but must work nine hours after they report to work. While off the field I expect my coaches to dress professionally at all times. This means coaches are to where at a minimum khaki pants and a polo shirt with dress shoes during office hours. I expect the coaches to conduct two 30 minute meetings per week with their position group during the season and one position meeting with their position group for 15 minutes every three weeks. The in season meetings are to discuss the game plan and any strategy. The off season meetings are to check in with their players to see how things are going and check on their grades. Off the field I also expect the coaches to do classroom checks on their position group to make sure they guys are going to class. I also expect the coaches to be doing some reading or research to find new ideas to bring into our school/football team; very few ideas are original they are all bits and pieces taken from other programs.
My assistants must also recognize that they are getting paid to coach a game. This should make them excited, they get the opportunity to do what they love every day and get paid for it! They need to think about that every morning on the way to work and bring enthusiasm and intensity in everything they do. They need to also realize they are role models for their athletes thus they must have good discipline and responsibility in order to be a good leader. I want a coaching staff full of leaders so there is no doubt what direction our football team is going; that direction is up!
