By Joe Daniel - O-Line Coach at Prince George (Va) HS:
Are you happy where you're coaching now? Enjoy this process.
No matter what point in your career you are at.
Unfortunately, not all coaches do that.
A lot of guys get frustrated with where they're at. For many reasons.
The promotions are not coming fast enough. You want more control.
The kids aren't athletic enough.
The Head Coach/Coordinators don't have your vision.
You start thinking about greener pastures. Lose focus on where you're at.
Here's the bad news...
Perfect situations are rare.
Where you're at right now? It's the best place you can be at this moment.
Enjoy what you do right now. That's the only way to get where you want to be later.
That's the only way to handle any situation!
Having a positive attitude where you're at will trickle down to your players. Then your players play better, you win more games.
There's a honeymoon when you start any new job.
Then you start to realize, this isn't perfect. There are some problems.
Not talking major stuff, but just some clashing personalities. Differences of opinions.
It may get ugly. Sometimes our arrogance can even cause us to lose some professionalism.
Remember, competitive guys. Mostly meatheads when we were in college.
Then the team goes on a roll. Reels off a few wins.
Winning cures everything.
When the losing starts again... the problems resurface. And let me emphasize, I'm not talking about major problems. I mean problems we all have.
So what's the best thing you can do when you're dreaming of greener pastures?
Love where you are at. Pour your heart and soul into it.
It's what is best for the kids. And it is what's best for the situation.
If your attitude has sucked lately, fix that first. It beats working yourself to death to try to fix your problems... but that's for next time.
Because being a miserable, arrogant SOB has never won anybody more games.
