Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
When thinking about a defensive philosophy I like to focus on the things that drive me wild when I am running my offense. Ideally, I would run a defense that focuses on taking away the best player on the other team. That is typically accomplished through a man-zone concept. And to do that I would run more of a nickel look as my base as opposed to the traditional 3-4 or 4-3. By giving zone help over the top of man coverage this allows for the team to eliminate the best player on offense and force other players to step up. I feel this approach also is helpful since today a lot of teams are starting to switch to pass first, spread offenses anyway.
A pursuit drill I would like to run is the "Path Cross" drill. Having the defense start on their bellies then having to cross the face of the ball carrier down the sideline. This will help create better angles on defense, and promote the "swarm" mindset once the ball is given up from the quarterback.

My defensive philosophy is the following:
Discipline – To have a good defense every player is to carry out their assignment on every play. Each player will know their role, technique, and do it to the best of their ability
Enthusiasm – To have a good defense every player is to be positive and enthusiastic; nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm
Ferocity – To have a good defense every player is to physically penetrate, pursue, and punish; by penetrating the line of scrimmage, pursuing the ball carrier, and punishing the ball carrier on every play
Effectiveness – To have a good defense every player is to ensure that every movement and communication within the team produces the desired result or meets the desired goal.
Never – To have a good defense every player is to be resolute in never allowing mediocrity and complacency to set into the spirit of the team
Solidarity – To have a good defense, every player understands that football is a team sport; we give of ourselves for the total result, “Be Unselfish”
Endurance – To have a good defense every player understands that with endurance comes success as this make the team quicker, stronger, and more effective
The daily pursuit drill that I run positions coaches at four points on the field. As each coach receives a pass and has possession of the ball the defense is to follow the ball. This develops ball location awareness, it increases speed, and agility, as well as stamina. This provides the defense with the ability to recognize and effectively react to the offense with speed and strength.
The type of defense I would run would be the 4-3 defense. Although viewed as being conservative, the 4-3 provides versatility for the defense. The 4-3 is most effective when the defense possesses the strength and speed to run this model. The four defensive linemen can stop the run while the tackles confuse the offense. The 4-3 defense can also be effective against the passing game when the line applies pressure to the quarterback. With these factors in place, the offense will have a difficult time in being effective due to the defense’s ability to adjust to the offensive schemes.
