Is there a "science" to scripting plays? By that I mean why do you pick certain plays to be part of the script? Do you try to account for down and distances? Coach Casillas
A few years ago I had the same exact question and I was able to get a pretty good answer from Mark Richt, who is now the head coach at the university of Georgia. He suggested that we script the first 20 plays with the odd numbers (1,3,5 etc) being first down plays and the even numbers (2,4,6 etc.) being second down plays. He then suggested having the rest of your game plan broken down into segmented situations, ie: 3rd and long 3rd and short etc. The 20 play script itself is used to see what looks the defense will give you based on the formations you put in front of them which will allow you to make the necessary adjustments as the game goes on. It is not geared so much towards down and distance. Over the past few years we have tried to throw in as many multiple formations in the first 20 plays just so we can get an idea of how the defense is going to adjust!
I am not sure if this helps at all but we have found this scripting system to be successful.
Coach, We also script the first 20 plays. We base our script on tendencies we get from film study. In three of the eight games we played last year, we used the whole 20 plays to score on our first drive. We also like the use of multiple formations to see what types of adjustments defensive teams will use.

I script our first 10 plays...the only time I will come off the script is on third down or if the defense is aligned in an expected structure and the play on the script is not good. I like to script as many different formations and motions into the first 10...I like throwing as much varied stuff as possible at this time...i.e. 1st play reverse...2nd play screen...3rd play option...4th play sprint out...etc...I will not generally repeat a play during the first 10 unless it's obvious to do so...I do, however, allow my QB a great deal of flexibility...he has the go-ahead to change the play at the LOS...from a run to a pass...from a pass to a run...opposite calls, etc. So although the 1st 10 may be scripted, he likely will check out of some of them based on what he sees. pdow
