Any discussion of this topic would HAVE to be broken down into many CATEGORIES. Simply asking about HOW to defend the "Triple" won't get it done!!!
It begs the question "WHOSE TRIPLE OPTION"?
We have seen the following STYLES of Triple Option come (& in some cases go). There ARE some differences in preparation for each:
2. Split Back Veer
6. Shotgun Triple (what WE see most)
6. Pistol Triple
There is even a book out by my old friend Tony DeMeo called:
"101 Ways to Run the Option Nov 15, 2007"
by Tony Demeo
The best SINGLE source of the topic is (on Amazon.com) by another old friend of mine = Richard Bell. As Defensive Coordinator at Air Force, Richard not only PRACTICED vs. the "Triple", but played against it vs. the likes of Navy, Army, ETC. He used the 3-4, 3-3 Stack, & the 4-3.
"Winning Defensive Football" Apr 20, 2010
by Richard Bell
Winning Defensive Football combines the four- and five-man front defenses into a winning system of excellent coordination for coaches on all levels. With chapters covering everything from defensive philosophy to 50 Front (3-4), and practice reorganization; this book has information to help take your team s defensive play to the next level. Includes over 1,000 diagrams and illustrations in a large-format, 430-page book.
PS: I have a friend who is in charge of film for an ACC member school. He sends me film on any team that does well vs. Ga. Tech. so I can keep up with the latest ideas on defending the FLEXBONE (which is what form of "Triple" WE see most!
