For the most part our offensive coaches and defensive coaches work hand in hand with responsibilities. On Saturdays we typically get game film for our upcoming opponent. Some we already have, but we get their game from Friday night. Each coach watches the film individually and takes down notes. The OC and DC come up with their own game plan and bring it to our coaches meeting on Sunday. On Sunday the entire staff meets to go over thoughts and ideas about the upcoming opponent. We work on the game plans and discuss how we will implement the game plan throughout practice that week.
On Monday's the OC and DC will explain to our players the game plan for the upcoming week. The DC makes a packet with charts on hudl of the opponents favorite formations and plays. The packets are passed out to the defensive players so they can look over and are more familiar with the opponents tendencies. The OC will go over the formations and plays we plan to use for the week. Sometimes we throw in wrinkles or make adjustments to our typical offense and this is the time we can show our players these things. After good chalk talk session with the players, we will take them outside for a quick stretch and show them the upcoming opponents favorite formations. I think by giving them a visual right away, will help them understand when they look at the packet.
For the remainder of the week up to Thursday the staff will implement the game plan throughout our practices. Our scout defense will run the defense our opponent uses, especially their alignments, coverages and stunts. During our defensive sessions we will try to use the best non defensive players to give our defense the best look on the scout offense. During individual work and groups the players will get the proper coaching to understand the concepts of the game plan. When we come together for team, our scout offense must run the opponents plays to the best of their ability. The better look they give our defense, the better prepared we will be come Game Day. On Thursday, we will do more of a walk through session. Our offense will run plays on air and our defense will adjust to the scout offenses alignments and call out the favorite plays. Also, before we even go to the practice field, we will watch film as a team every day. I think it is important to watch the film before practice, so the players can see exactly what they are going to be practicing for that day. Also, the coaches will meet after every practice to go over the practice. We will discuss the positives and negatives of the practice and make any adjustments needed to the game plan. Sometimes that is personnel issues or just full blown adjustments.
On game days, we will have meetings set aside after the team dinner. During this time each position coach will be in a classroom with their players. The coaches will do a quick review of the game plan and give an inspirational speech for the game. This is also an important time for the players to ask any last minute questions that have concerning the game plan. After offensive positional meetings, we will flip over to defense and the defensive coaches will talk with their position groups. Once again this is a time to review the game plan, draw up the formations one more time and answer any questions. After positional meetings, the team will go to the basketball gym and the offense will run through a set of plays. These plays will more then likely be a set of 10 plays that we will start the game with. After offense, the defense will line up. A scout offensive will line up in formations and walk through 5-10 plays to give the defense one last look.
During the game our offensive line coach will be on the headset with the OC and Head coach. His job is to draw up the alignment of the defense against each of our formations. This way we can make adjustments at the half. Sometimes those include turning our Power plays into Leads, because we do not want to pull the backside guard. Defensively our DC likes to be up in the box to get a better all around view of the offense. Thus he relays the calls to our DB coach and he gives the defense the play call. At halftime the offense meets for a few minutes to make any adjustments then the defense will meet. A lot of times our players go both ways, so we have to make adjustments quickly, that way they can get a drink and relax during half time.
With the technology of hudl now a days. We do not have to send someone to scout a team. Now, if we play on a Saturday, I like to have my coaches go scout upcoming opponents, but if we play on Friday then we will just get the hudl film. On Saturdays, I like bringing the team in for an early morning stretch. This helps our players with recovery, so they are fresh come Monday. After stretching, the team will watch the film from the night before. We do this so we can move on from a win or a tough loss. We put the game behind us and move on to our next opponent come Monday.
