If your QB is experienced at making reads, and is mobile you may think about calling "Option on Me" at the line of scrimmage. At the line of scrimmage, with a single tight double wide offense, the quarterback can first look at at the offensive weak side and if there are no "inverts" outside of the tackle box, the QB could call an inside veer play. If there is an invert on the weak side, then the QB would check the strong side, if there is no invert on the TE side the QB may call a load play. If both sides have inverts, then the QB will look at how the defensive line is set up. If the interior line is set up in a 2 or 3 tech on the TE side then the best option is midline, if the line is set up in a 5 and 9 tech, then load will be the best option.
Cons:
In an option offense, your quarterback undertakes a lot of punishment, the better the quarterback is at the mesh, or pitch read, the more likely he is to get tackled on any given play. I would want, at the very least, two QB's that can run the offense, because the chances of needing a back up to go in the game are much higher in an option offense than a conventional offense. You must have speed at QB or the defense will cheat toward the pitchman or dive back. The QB must also be able to make really quick reads, because each of the option have a read man, an unblocked defender, and if the QB is not fast at making the read, then the offense will not work.
Pros:
If ran properly, the opponents defense is on the field a lot and if not well conditioned, or does not have good depth, then they get tired out, making this offense dangerous. Since your team can dominate the time of position, it keeps your defense fresh as well. After much practice, it can be very hard for a defense to stop. Also, an offense does not have to memorize a lot of plays, just profect the running of the few.
