With defensive line play and the advancement of zone blocking schemes by offensive line play, defensive lineman need to gain their advantage back. Would like to discuss this topic for defensive line coaches and players. Coach CAmpbell
The key to the mirror step is this. The terminology for a defensive lineman on movement by an offensive lineman is to be in the same place you where in prior to the snap of the ball. Example if I was playing a 3 tech. and was getting reached by the guard I would mirror with the same foot the offensive lineman was stepping with. Don't power step then react because you will get base reached. With the mirror step your power step is the mirror step as long as it attacks the LOS. Coach CAmpbell
Coach what is your philosophy when teaching your def. linemen? are you teaching them to explode and get into the backfield creating havoc, or are you teaching them to make two block them and work along the line allowing others to make the tackle? At the Mega two years ago, the Boston College D-Line coach was hell bent on creating havoc. Your thoughts? thanks
Coach I wouldn't concentrate on raising havoc but teaching my players how to make plays. Success defensively is geared to how many players you can get to the football and not by how much havoc you can raise. Your defensive front players are keying movement and should be working off the back heels of the offensive lineman they are aligned against. This is a good topic would like to take this one further. Coach CAmpbell
I will coach d line for the first time this year and I'm thinking about several teaching schemes. On zone or reach or scoop blocks I'm thinking about instructing them to jam the upfield shoulder preventing the ol from squaring his shoulders and snapping his hips to pressure. Does this make sense? I thought if it was an inside/veer type of block I would teach ripping with outside arm across the face of the blocker to pressure. I just have to figure out a way to keep them from over commiting to the inside in this case. Well, any help is appreciated.

Coach the key as you know to get your guys running with the mirror step is to "be In The Same Position You Where In Prior To The Snap Of The Ball". always keep shoulders square to the LOS vs the run and goal vs pass is to get your shoulders out of parallel as fast as possible with theo offensive lineman. Coach CAmpbell
COACH, IF THE 3 TECH (RDT) IS GETTING REACHED BY THE RG, IS THE STEP WITH THE LEFT FOOT OR THE RIGHT FOOT FOR THE 3 TECH. ALSO, IS THE HAND TECH TRYING TO KEEP THE UPFIELD SHOULDER OF THE RG FROM GETTING TURNED. Thanks GLAZE

Glaze - If your DT is in a 3 tech and the ball comes at him he will mirror step with his playside foot not allowing the OG to reach him, whenever playing the run keep shoulders squared to the LOS, 3 tech needs to squeeze the reach. Your defensive tackle works off the block once the ball crosses his outside shoulder. Coach CAmpbell
