The pre-season parent meeting is a vital part for how the season should start. It gives the coaches a chance to explain their vision for the team and what the parents should expect from the coaches during the season. Here's some things that a pre-season parents meeting can include and what is expected to be covered:
The first thing that would happen is an introduction into the program and an introduction from all of the coaches, so the parents know exactly is coaching their kids. There will be a brief description of the program and what it means to be apart of such a program along with a story or two from my past coaching experiences. If possible the athletic director and principal should be present to show their belief in the program and to show to everyone that they care about their kids and that schooling should always come first and shouldn't be disregarded while playing football or any sports.
The next topic should include the expectations of the players and the commitments that they must make in order to be successful. The players need to understand that being a part of a team is a commitment and it will take time away from doing other activities after school and sometimes during Saturday mornings for practice (if needed). The teams will then be broken up into the different levels so the parents can meet their kids coaches and get familiar with them. A weekly schedule will be made for the students who can share it with their parents so they know times and dates of practices, games, meetings, and other important information that they may need to know throughout the season.
When the meeting is about to wrap up parents/guardians will be welcomed to come down and meet all of the coaches along with the athletic director and the principal and will be able to ask any questions that they may have regarding the upcoming season. Communication is a big part of building a relationship with all of the parents so giving them your phone number is a good way to stay in touch with them. Sometimes coaches don't want their phone number being out there for anyone and everyone to see so there are alternative ways to keep in touch like through email or messaging apps.
When ending the meeting, it is always best to end it on a positive note and reiterate specific dates like when practices start, homecoming, senior night, booster meetings, and any other dates that are important.
