To Coach Campbell and other Coaches,
I just recently purchased your Mid-line Option video. I thought you did an excellent job with the video. I know that I certainly gained knowledge about the Mid-line opion thanks to your video. I would highly recommend this video to any other coach interested in learining about the Mid-line option. I also find it fascinating that we can communicate with you through this website. Great Idea! You’re the man!!!
We are a Run N Shoot Offense and we are looking to incorporate more of the running game. Last year we installed the QB Veer (no pitch back) from the spread look and we also installed the Veer Option (with a tight slot, running circle motion). We had great success with both of these plays last year, and we are looking to expand our option game. One of the options we are thinking about is the Mid-Line Option, which I have been studying a lot during this offseason. However I am a little bit on the conservative side. I feel that the 10/11 Jill is a really "safe" and productive play. I love it! I would be running it from a "Spread look" with double "tight slots". My fear with this play is that the Strong Safety (OLB) in a 4-4 cover 3 defense can become a force player, if everytime he reads that Tight Slot run a fold block, he can step into the box hard and make the play. If he is making the tackle 5-7 yds. deep, than great! But if he steps up a little harder and begins making the tackle at 2-3 yds deep, now I could have a problem. This is what leads me to think that I should also run the 10/11 Mike, so I can keep the Strong Safety honest. With the 10/11 Mike it gives me the opportunitty to get the ball on the perimeter, given that the DT and the DE both slant inside. Although the Strong Safety's read is slightly different vs. the 10/11 Mike because now he has the Tight Slot blocking him instead of the Tight Slot "Fold blocking", I think I can atleast keep him honest if I have him thinking that we will sometimes pitch the ball.
The 10/11 Mike looks really good on paper, but I have some concerns about the excecution of the play. My concern is the DE. What if you have a DE who is "well schooled" with stepping down hard, everytime the Offensive Tackle releases inside or down blocks? In your oppinion given the DT closes in on the Dive, do you think your average/above average QB has enough time to react to the DE (closing-in quick) and pitch the ball effectively to the slot circling around?
Have you ever had any problems with the 10/11 Mike? Have you ever had to step away from it a little bit during certain seasons because of certain problems you were having? Can you offer me any additional advice at all with the 10/11 Mike?
When speaking with another coach he suggested that instead of running the 10/11 Mike that we should change it up a bit. He suggested that we block the DT (3 tech) with our Guard and have our Tackle step down on the DT (3 tech)to double team him and than "kiss-off" to the Playside Inside LB vs. a 4-4. He also suggested "not" to ride the fullback. He felt that the QB didn't have enough time to react to the DE. He thought that riding the fullback slowed the play down, not allowing the QB to react quick enough when he needed to react, according to the DE's movement. By blocking the DT (3 tech) it would save the QB some time because he wouldn't have to read the DT (3 tech). This would allow him to "pin his eyes" immediately on the DE. Also, in this case he wouldn't be riding the Fullback. The Fullback will just "flash" past the QB on the midline and carry out the fake. This will allow the QB to start at a quicker pace when attacking the DE. My question about this adjustment to you about this adjustment is simple. What do you think about this adjustment?
Thank you very much
