I have great playbooks from Army and Hawaii when they were running spread. Greg Gregory was at Army and Paul Johnson was at Hawaii. These are both between 150-200 pages each. These are great playbooks. I also have about 5 hours of great lecture video from Army, Greg Gregory, several hours from Chuck Peterson at AFA and Ken Nuimatalolo when he was at Navy. I have several drills from when I coached at Southern Utah. I have a few tapes but I know the staff pretty good at Navy and Georgia Southern so pretty much I have tons of stuff. Coach Johnson has never put out a playbook and never will he is way to secretive for that. He gave us the 5th degree when we made 2 videos about the offense at Southern Utah.

The key to the offense is to learn "the count" once you master that you can do tons of things with the offense.

You can count 2 ways -

A) from the handoff key out - i.e.. handoff key is #1. next person #2, next person #3. You do not count the person who is responsible to take the SE deep.

A front will have 3 outside (treat as 7 man) or 2 (reduced)

B) You can count from the outside in (count all) if #4 is the handoff key - non reduced (treat as 7 man front) if #4 is inside the handoff key it is reduced. (to nub side you must always add one to count for lack of SE) this is Army's old way.

This very simplistic explanation as you still must recognize a 6 man side, the te flanks (if you use them) and we have tons of formations and calls to change the count to our favor!

I always had a little trouble with the Inside-Out counting system, because the Slotback had to identify the dive key to start the count.

With the outside-in count system, he just looks for #2 from the outside-in (exception: Cov 2 look) and he knows he arcs him unless seal is called.

Which system do you use, and how to do you teach the QB and SB to be on the same page?

Yes, we just recently obtained it. It is seems to be good for the basics of intalling parts of the option, but it is not the complete playbook from Air Force. We are searching for option installation and complimentary plays to make adjustments with versus various defenses. Our option game revolved primarily around the midline and some inside veer, but we don't have many answers when we cannot run those two plays.

Thunder,The next answer is Outside veer.It really opened up our offense and the end of 2003 and all through the 2004 season.We ran it weak most of the time either doubling the 5-tech to ILB or blocking down with the OT influencing the 5-tech to squeeze and washing him down with the SB.We read the next man on or off the L.O.S. for dive/keep.We also liked to crack with the SE on FS and pitch off CB if FS was running the alley hard.

I keep these splits regardless.If I can't find five O-linemen to double team or "rip and run",it doesn't matter what size splits I have.I feel these splits help not only the O-line,but the QB,and the FB.The QB has more time to read,(it makes the defense move,therefore making the QB's decision a lot easier,no guessing),and the FB can see his blocking or lack of blocking develop better.
