Title - Coaching Beyond the X's and O's by the Experts Author - Edited by Earl Browning Publication Date - 2003 Rating (5 stars possible) - 5
Comments - This is a book full of lectures from coaches clinics from some of the top coaches in the country. The focus of the lectures is not on schemes but on the real things that win football games which is motivation, pride and execution. Some of the authors include Frank Beamer, Mike Belotti, Larry Coker, Joe Paterno, Tyrone Willingham, Bobby Bowden and Bob Stoops. This is a very good book because it is full of ideas that could be implemented into any program.

Title - When the Game Stands Tall Author - Neil Hayes Publication Date - 2003 Rating (5 stars posible) - 5
Comments - This book gives you a behind the scences look at the 2002 De La Salle Spartans. You follow them through the highs and lows of growing as teen agers and defending the nations longest winning streak. I think this book is amazing. I read the entire thing in 4 days. This book is much like Friday Night Lights but it is all positive. Coach Lad teaches his players how to live life. Its an amazing story.
"The harder you work, the harder it is to surrender" - V. Lombardi
I recommend "The Assembly Line" by Milt Tenopir as well as Coach Campbells book on the OLine. The DLine video series by Coach Golla are second to none.
I recommend "One Heart Beat" (2001) by Mac Brown or "High Hopes"(1998?) By Gary Barnett. These two men are examples of excellent motivators and I there is a lot to be learned from the way these two coaches explain their programs and the way they motivate. I was fortunate enough to see both of these men talk at a clinic. If given the opportunity again I would not miss it for the world.
Title - It's Not About the Bike Author - Lance Armstrong Publication Date - 2001 Rating (5 stars posible) - 5
Comments - Again this isnt neccesarily a book where you will learn a ton about football, but it is a profile in courage and I think that anyone who reads this can learn about life, and thats what we need to teach the kids anyway. I recommend this book for anyone, football coach or not. I am currently trying to get my fiance to read this book.
"The harder you work, the harder it is to surrender" - V. Lombardi
Title - When Pride Still Mattered Author - David Maraniss Publication Date - 1999 Rating (5 stars posible) - 4.5
Comments - This look into Lombardi's life and character is very compelling. It is a great biography of one of the games greats. Parts of the book get a little long winded but it is well worth it.
"The harder you work, the harder it is to surrender" - V. Lombardi
Title - Football's Quick Passing Game: More Advanced Routes Author - Andrew Coverdale and Dan Robinson Publication Date - 1998 Rating (5 stars posible) - 5
Comments - This book is extremely thourough just like the other books written by this duo. There are a few very sound packages discussed. For any coach who wants to add some short passes to their offense this is a great resource.
"The harder you work, the harder it is to surrender" - V. Lombardi
I recommend the Right Kind of Heroes: Coach Bob Shannon and the East St. Louis Flyers by Kevin Horrigan. This book should be an inspiration to all, especially those who are coaching in the most dire of situations. While I didn't play for Coach Shannon, he was one of my inspirations for coaching. I knew quite a few of his players, and I know East St. Louis, and this man was a God-send for that environment and a lot of those kids.
Title - The Art of War Author - Edited by Ralph Sawyer Publication Date - 1994 Rating (5 stars posible) - 3.5
Comment - This book stresses the importance of preparation, knowledge of the opponent and intelligence when attacking. You can relate this book to football if you try. It is a nice quick read as well.
"The harder you work, the harder it is to surrender" - V. Lombardi
Title - One Great Game Author - Don Wallace Publication Date - 2003 Rating (5 stars posible) - 5
Comment - In the tradition of Friday Night Lights this book brings you to the heart of the Long Beach Poly, De La Salle matchup. I couldnt give this book higher accolades. It is extremely well written and brings you inside the lives of these two teams, when they first met in 2001.
"The harder you work, the harder it is to surrender" - V. Lombardi
Title - The Split Back Veer Manual Author - Lou Varley Publication Date - 2003 Rating (5 stars posible) - 4
This is a very well written manual, but in my case I found alot of the information was concepts I already knew. It would be a very very good manual for beginning veer coaches. Long time veer veterans will not get much out of this except for possibly a few different pass protection ideas.
"The harder you work, the harder it is to surrender" - V. Lombardi
Title - Multiple 3-4 Defense Author - Jerry Campbell Publication Date - 2002 Rating (5 stars posible) - 4.5
Comment - This manual is a good resource for 3-4 coaches or coaches who face this type of defense. The material is sound and well explained. There is also a small section dedicated to position drills which is very helpful.
"The harder you work, the harder it is to surrender" - V. Lombardi
Wow it really has been a while since I posted on this thread.
Title - The Explosive Veer Offense for Winning Football
Author - Jim Wacker and Don Morton
Publication Date - 1980
Rating (5 stars posible) - 5.0
Comments - Axman's Book applies the base plays against a breadth of different defenses, but this book gives you deep insight into many different plays, all revolving around the base veer plays. This book is a MUST for all split back veer coaches
Title - Developing Effective Pass Protection Schemes
Author - Stan Zweifel and Brad Boll
Publication Date - 2001
Rating (5 stars posible) -5.0
Comments - This book covers just about anything you would want to know about pass protection from 3 step, 5 step, sprint out, play action, and bootleg, covering turnback, gap, and BOB protections. If you need to gain more knowledge on pass protection schemes and implementation this is the book for you.
Title - Coaching the Frontliners
Author - Harold Etheridge
Publication Date - 2001
Rating (5 stars posible) - 4.5
Comments - I didnt think this book was quite as good as Chirstensen's offfensive line book, but it is very good in its own right. What I found most valuable were the short sections on evaluating game day performance and analyzing the opponent.
Title - The Psychology of Coaching Team Sports
Author - Larry Leith
Publication Date - 2003
Rating (5 stars posible) - 4.5
Comments - Although the author is from Canada, we shouldnt hold that against him. When I heard Larry Kehres speak at a clinic a few years back he stressed the importance of studying human behavior, to learn about motivation and team dynamics, so this is the book I found. It covers coach-athlete relationship, focus, team cohesion, controlling agression and burnout, among others. I highly recommend this book for any coach looking for that extra edge. There is something in here for everyone.
Title - Notre Dame's Greatest Coaches
Author - Moose Krause and Stephen Singular
Publication Date - 1993
Rating (5 stars posible) - 3.0
Comments - I was hoping for a little more coaching advice or theory in here, but it is really more of a biography type of book, covering Leahy, Hotlz, Rockne and Parseghian. If you love ND and are looking for a quick read this is it, otherwise stay away.
Title - The Assembly Line
Author - Milt Tenopir
Publication Date - 1996
Rating (5 stars posible) - 4.0
Comments - I rated this book a 4.0 because while it is good it is geared toward one style of offensive line play, and especially the inside and outside zone plays. If you run those plays get this book. If you dont and coach OL it is still a good book to have but you might not get as much out of it depending on your system.
Title -The Turnaround from 0-10 to 10-0
Author - Chuck Mottley
Publication Date - 1999
Rating (5 stars posible) - 3.5
Comments - This book isnt as good as I wanted it to be. When reading it you can tell it wasnt written by an experienced author, tince it was authored by one of the assistant coaches. There isnt much coaching advice in here either, its more of a here is the story of how our games unfolded.... It isnt bad but definatley not one you should run out and find tomorrow.
Title - Do You Love Football
Author - Jon Gruden and Vic Carucci
Publication Date - 2003
Rating (5 stars posible) -3.5
Comments - Another real quick read, and its real cheap on amazon.com. This just gives you some background on Gruden's coaching rise, not much into his philosophy or anything like that. Another book that isnt bad if you dont have more important things to do. There are a few nice insights in here however, and its worth the price.
Title - No Quitters Here
Author - B.M. Woodward
Publication Date - 1997
Rating (5 stars posible) - 4.0
Comments - Its a great story but it is written by, let say an inexperienced football fan/coach. What I mean by that is her description of football is very rudimentary. It follows a small town team in Michigan coached originally by Tony Annese. It is a rather long book as well at over 500 pages. The best part of the book in my opinion are the various quotes at the beginning of each chapter. There are a few good coaching ideas in the book but they are scattered throughout.
Title - The Pyramid of Successs
Author - Neville Johnson
Publication Date - 2003
Rating (5 stars posible) - 4.5
Comments - I didnt give this book a 5.0 because the book talks quite a bit about John Wooden's early life and career. The book is an autobiography, but the true reason I read the book was for the coaching advice, not so I could tell people where John Wooden grew up.
With that in mind if you cant get something out of this book, then you arent a coach.
Title - High Hopes
Author - Gary Barnett
Publication Date - 1996
Rating (5 stars posible) - 4.0
Comments - In light of what did or didnt happen in Colorado the message of this book has been tarnished a little in my mind. While the message is sincere and valuable for any coach to read, I kept thinking if some of these things were sacrificed in Colorado. Many good pieces of coaching knowledge are in here however.
Title - Every Second Counts
Author - Lance Armstrong and Sally Jenkins
Publication Date - 1994
Rating (5 stars posible) - 4.0
Comments - This is a follow up to "Its not about the bike." Even though it isnt a football book there are lessons here that can be applied to football. Lance's ideas on repsonsibility and competition are valuable. Its a quick read as well.
Title - For God and Country
Author - Fisher DeBerry and Bob Schaller
Publication Date - 2000
Rating (5 stars posible) - 4.0
Comments - The real value in this book is when DeBerry speaks about relationships and the role that the Lord has played in his life. I read this book in two days, so its another quick read. Pick it up if you get the chance.
Title - 101 Defensive Line Drills
Author - Mark Snyder
Publication Date - 2001
Rating (5 stars posible) -3.5
Comments - I felt that many of these drills were not appropriate for high school athletes, but if you coach DL's there are surely some things you can get out of this.
