Title -The Right Kind of Heroes
Author - Kevin Horrigan
Publication Date - 1992
Rating (5 stars posible)- 5.0
Comments - This is a great book. I read it because of the recommendation of another poster. Shannon's leadership and the way he instills values is tremendously remarkable and he is a good role model for us coaches, based on that fact.
Ok thats all I have for now. Things on the shelf that I will review when I get to are:
From Veer to Eternity - George Thole and Jerry Foley
Field of Valor - Jack Clary
Coaching the Multiple 4-3 Defense - Dennis Harris
Home Field Advantage - Ken Ruettgers and Dave Branon
Coaching the Defensive Line - Fritz Shurmur
Developing a Successful Football Program - Mike Aruanno
Title - Season of Life
Author - Jeffrey Marx
Publication Date - 2004
Rating (5 stars posible)- 5.0
Comments - I forgot this one because I lent it to someone else. This is the greatest book I have ever read. Marx meets up with Joe Ehrmann who was on the Baltimore Colts while he was a ballboy. Ehrmann is now a minister and a coach at the Gilman School in Baltimore. The book touches on what it means to be a man, and what values we should be teaching. Its great !!
Season of Life is outstanding.
If you coach because you love KIDS read it!
It is about what football can do for kids if they have the right coaches around them. I challenge every coach to read this and then ask ...
WHAT DO KIDS GET FROM YOUR PROGRAM WHEN THEY LEAVE IT???
Most aren't playing on Saturdays, and almost NONE are playing on Sundays!
Title - From Veer to Eternity
Author - George Thole
Publication Date - 2003
Rating (5 stars posible) - 4
This book is written by a retired coach from Minnesota who won four state titles in 5A. The book is written in a very direct manner, and includes the footwork for the entire backfield and blocking schemes for the base veer plays, complimentary runs, and sprint out and semi-roll passing game. If you are new to the veer this would be a great book for you. If you have coached the veer for years then there could be some new ideas or it could be used as a quick reference guide for things you already do.
Title - Coaching the Defensive Line
Author - Fritz Shurmur
Publication Date - 1997
Rating (5 stars posible) - 5
I have not read many things on defensive line play yet, but I feel that this book increase my knowledge of DL 10 fold. I especially like all the little tidbits he throws in just because he has so much experience he has seen so many things either work or fail. It is very straightforward and easy to understand as well.
Title - Make The Big Time Where You Are
Author - Frosty Westering
Publication - 2004 (4th printing) 1990 First Printing
Rating - 5 stars
Comments - This is a very quick read with some great stories that can very easily be used with your team. From "The Edge" on the three-sided coin, to the "Success Road," Frosty's message is powerful. It is no accident that many of his former players are now coaching... they love more than just the game.
Coaches: Thank you for this strand on this forum. I have read many of the books mentioned, and especially appreciate your comments on "Season of Life." I had read some books that I really loved, and this one tops them all. I think that "Seasons" should be required reading for all those called into this profession. Keep up the great work!
