Coach B - I teach if covered read near back if uncovered read through the offensive lineman that you are aligned over to the near back your side, if you like you can cross key your backs. As you, we see multiple offenses and must have a defined read, for our backers this holds up and is tested postive through the many years of the game. Coach CAmpbell
When you say covered, do you mean having a defensive lineman in front of you? I am not clear as to what you mean by cross keying backs. For example if they are in an I formation. As I said, I bought your book, and we have drawn up similar things. I am not the DC, so it is ultimately not my call as to how we play our 4-4. We had success at the end of last season by going to 5's, 1 to the strong side and a 3 to the weak side. We stacked our middle LB's and brought our OLB's up on LOS if there was a TE. I coach LB's and am also wondering what else I can do to properly prepare my kids for all things. I want them to read and react, but I also want them stunting as much as possible. Our head coach thinks that with proper keys, their reactions will look like a stunt. But, I'm worried that our kids will try to think to much and not react. The biggest problem we are having is option responsiblities. We had a team run option out of the Wing T at us this past season, and it ate us alive. I want the Middle LB's keying FB and if he comes to you, you go to him and if he goes away, you find TB and scrape to him checking all uncovered holes. What do you think? Sorry about length. My e-mail is ckburton64@yahoo.com. All other coaches please reply also. Looking for as much info as possible.

Yes whenever you have a defensive lineman in front of you and he has the offensive lineman occupied that means covered. Crossing comes from whenever you get split backs or offset backs key the back to the opposite side, If facing the "I" Backs you then key near back to your side. Hope this helps Coach CAmpbell
