Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
Have any of you coached the option in youth football? I did two years ago, and we are going back to it this year. I was wondering what kind of option, and how did you install it?
We ran a called triple option. We would almost always run it to the SE side, and we would fake a dive to the fullback, and then pitch off of the DE. We would make the give/fake call to the fullback from the sideline when we sent the play in. Most of the time, the give to the fullback went for big yards. However, when defenses had aggressive linebackers, we would fake the dive, and then as the QB attacked the DE, the DE would almost always bite, and we would pitch it for a touchdown. The only loss of yards I can think that we ever had were when the QB would pitch even when the DE widened to contain the HB. Normally that was because he was so used to being able to pitch the ball, that it became habit.
We almost never lost yards on these plays. That was one of my favorite things about the I formation, was that it was quick hitting with power, and you rarely lose yardage. The two years we coached the wing-t it was a lot more of a lateral offense, and there would be several times we would be hit in the backfield before we could get turned upfield to gain yardage. Don't get me wrong, I like the wing-t and we still run some of the wing-t plays, but there is nothing like running the ball right at someone hard and fast....it sets up great playaction!
I'm planning on installing a speed option into our 2 minute offence....motion to trips out of a single back spread formation. snap the ball as the slot gets to the out side of the LB.......qb steps out and sprints toward the weak side de....make the de commit and pitch/keep off that read.......single back may have to jab step back for depth and better pitch angle....down block play side, if the dt play side is lined up head up or inside the guard the tackle down block to the lb....
We will be installing the midline, inside veer and possibly load options this year. I am fortunate to have a very gifted athlete (as well as a tremendous competitor) under center this year and am looking forward to capitalizing on it this season by adding the option to our running attack. I realize (or at least I think I do) the amount of time and reps we'll need to get these down but I'm really looking forward to the challenge of making it happen!
