Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
How many assistant coaches do you have coaching with you and what areas of responsibility do they have? Do you allow fathers on your staff? What types of training do you or your league provide? What methods do you use to prepare for opponents?

I will be very fortunate to have a full staff of 5 great coaches to work with along with an excellent EMT, who's son played for me a couple of years ago, who serves as our team trainer. Position responsibilities are broken down like this: QB/DB; RB/OLB; (2) OL/DL and WR/ILB. Last year I acted as the OC and DC but will most likely focus on calling only one side of the ball this season. Out of these 5 coaches, one is a dad and one is a step-dad. Other fathers are invited to help out where needed during practice as long as we're all on the same page at all times as to what's expected of the kids and what's expected of the adults on our practice field. We will meet 4-5 times (16-20 hours) as a staff to review our offensive and defensive plans before the season begins. My assistant head coach and I will attend a mandatory league coaching clinic and certification session that will take place approximately 3 weeks from now. Once our season begins we'll get together on Sunday afternoons to review and do a simple break down of Saturday's game tape as well as review tape of our next opponent if available. That weeks practice plan is put in place that evening and is then ready to go for practice on Monday.

The biggest obstacle to doing both jobs well is that you just don't have the opportunity to think ahead or to converse with your QB or other players in between possessions as you would working on one side of the ball. I only took over both functions because none of my coaches were comfortable enough to call plays on offense last season. I've found that playcalling is something that many coaches who have a good feel for the game can be quite good at, even if they're not really proficient with X's and O's. My advice if you wind up working both jobs is to try to make yourself focus on only the task at hand, which is often times easier said than done, and you'll do fine. Good Luck!

One other thing I would say in calling both offense and defense is that to the extent you can make one side of the ball self-sufficient (likely the one you're not as comfortable calling on the spot), it makes things a lot easier.
For example, we have tried to make our basic defensive design very simple, so that we can add adjustments (primarily based on our opponents' formational tendancies, which we spend a lot of time breaking down in film review) on a week to week basis. We spend a significant amount of practice time on our defensive adjustments, so our players can run the show on game day. As a result, our defense runs itself for the most part, in terms of being prepared for what we expect our opponent to do, and we as coaches can concentrate on supplementary issues such as when/where we want to blitz, solidify our front against the run by reducing, drop a guy out of the box because we've forced them to throw the ball, etc.
This frees us up to spend more time during the game dealing with adjustments we need to make in the offensive game plan, blocking schemes, formation selection, creating mismatches, etc. Having a very detailed offensive game plan also helps in this because you've made your decisions as to what you want to do by down, distance, hash, time, field position, etc. during the week, when you are thinking very logically, so you don't make short-sighted emotional decisions during the game. Hope this helps.
